Our 8th graders have been working hard to compile a portfolio, showcasing their educational journey and who they are. These portfolios include examples of academic and artistic work over the last year and a half - including writing compositions, science lab work, paintings or drawings, etc. Their work very much tells a story of the heart or our Waldorf education - where their learning comes to life with depth, breadth, and experience. A portrait of who they are is captured not through standardized tests, but rather with creativity, wonder, and the development of their whole selves. If you have a chance, visit the middle school hall to admire them all!

Meet Mr. Ochelle, a new music teacher at DWS! We are lucky to have him making music with nearly all of our students at DWS, as he teaches music for 1st through 12th grade! Moses is an experienced educator and started his career more than 15 years ago as a music teacher at the Nairobi Waldorf School. He also has been a Waldorf class teacher in the lower grades before most recently returning to a role as music teacher in Kenya.

By cultivating a warm and supportive classroom atmosphere, he aims to inspire a love for learning in his students, empowering them to become compassionate and responsible individuals who can make a positive impact on the world. We are grateful to have his talents, passion, and enthusiasm as he fills our school with the wonderful sounds of music.

This is the reason for our lantern walks each fall. To see how our own little light shines. To be that spark of light in the world for those around us. To shine bright together, illuminating our shared goodness. Last night, our younger grades braved the cold to light the path forward with their crafted lanterns. With the snow softly falling and sweet singing voices, it was a beautiful reminder of the light within each of us and the capacity of our community!

We are so proud of our 18-year-old seniors who voted in their first election today! We are grateful to have their voices shaping the narratives that define our country. Today, seeing their enthusiasm to be active participants in our country, they give us hope.

When we vote, we stand on the shoulders of giants — those who organized, protested, and sacrificed so that “we the people” could express our hopes and desires. Voting is an act of affirmation, a conscious choice that influences our communities and honors the ongoing work of building a multicultural democracy.

To see our students live out the lessons in our curriculum - to meaningfully express their values, to participate in our democracy, and to engage thoughtfully with complex social issues - is a full circle moment for us as educators to see the importance of the work we do.

Whether it’s our 5th graders sharing a morning jump rope together, or our 2nd graders doing their skip counting with movement, or the 6th graders doing a lap around the building- we like to move under the autumn trees and open skies 🍂. With our bodies engaged, we are ready for a day of learning and development of our whole selves!
