“While it [the Waldorf music curriculum] has the ability to produce fine musicians, its true aim is to help produce fine human beings. These Waldorf graduates go forth into the world with the tools our age so desperately needs for cultural renewal. They are active listeners, able to really hear not only what meets the ear but also the impulse and intentions that are truly behind the mere physical sound. They understand that working in the physical world takes effort, perseverance and a refinement of skills. They have experienced the dynamics of working within a group of peers with differing abilities in order to produce something fine, beautiful and meaningful.” - Jason Child for
the Association for Waldorf Music Education.

This is precisely why we all make music together at our school, each and every day. And this week, our 5th grade class had the privilege to enjoy a performance by the @coloradosymphony ! We nurture this appreciation for music not just for the enjoyment, but for its ability to make us whole human beings.

This is the reason for our lantern walks each fall. To be a reminder to see how our own little light shines. To be that spark of light in the world for those around us. To shine bright together, illuminating our shared goodness. Last night, our younger grades lit the path forward with their crafted lanterns. With the rare treat of a glimmer from the northern lights, it was a magical evening and testament of the light within each of us and the capacity of our community!

It was as if our lanterns lit up the night sky with a glimmer of the northern lights 🌟. What a magical evening it was as our grades one through four families gathered in the park for our lantern walk. With the glow of our collective lanterns, it was a rare evening to exist in slowness, in the quiet spaces between us, walking side by side – each contributing a faint light to the sparkling landscape. It was a distinct picture of what we are to one another, what we are to ourselves, and our contribution as a collective.

This is what we mean when we say we have a holistic, arts-integrated curriculum. When our 7th graders study African geography, they go far beyond memorizing land formations, countries, and climate zones. They also study biographies, economic influences, and culture to understand the people and histories behind the maps. Their independent projects blend research, writing, and illustration to bring their learning to life through creativity and curiosity - deepening not only their understanding, but also joy in the lesson.

Some might think having middle schoolers do the cha-cha, foxtrot, waltz, and twist are old fashioned. But there is an intention to our dance curriculum! If you’ve ever had a chance to witness a Waldorf middle school dance, you notice that there is just something different about our dances. EVERYONE is dancing. Often rotating partners, our students happily and comfortably dance the night away! It’s not about going with a date or corsages - it’s about providing a wonderful social outlet as they navigate the middle school years. Through their practice, they learn how to move together with a partner - developing respect for one another, confidence in movement, and a healthy appreciation of each person’s best efforts- all the while having fun with friends. A big thank you to The Schoolboys (a band comprised mostly of DWS alumni parents!) and to @shiningmountainwaldorf and @bouldervalleywaldorfschool for joining us!

Part I of “Why did you choose our Waldorf high school?” We asked some of our high school students to share about their choice to be here at DWS - and we always love hearing their reflections on their Waldorf education. We have to agree that this is a pretty special place! We are grateful for our wonderful teachers that invest themselves in the well-being of our students. For the joy in our classrooms and engaged conversations. For our creative community and compassionate students. For the many opportunities open to pursue as you wish - whether it’s a cultural exchange, new club, or part of the senior project. Schedule a tour to see for yourself what makes DWS high school an inspiring place of growth, warmth, support for one another, and good fun 😊!

All the lanterns getting ready to shine bright 🌟. Each fall, as the days grow shorter, our early childhood classes as well as our younger grades prepare for our Lantern Walks by making their own lantern to carry. The Lantern Walk is a tradition across Waldorf schools and it inspires us to not only rekindle our own light, but to also share it with others. The Lantern Walk allows us to see how our own little light shines in the darkness, no matter how small - each of us is a spark of light in the world. As we walk together in the darkness with our lanterns and singing songs, we nurture and protect our own light and warmth - sharing it with all those around us. We look forward to lighting the night together next week 🕯️.

Join us for our upcoming winter session of our much loved Sweet Peas parent-tot program - registration is open for both our Wednesday and Saturday sessions! Sweet Peas is an eight week session for parents and/or caregivers and children 12 months to 2.5 years old to experience Waldorf. The warm and simple rhythm guides children and their families through activities such as bread baking, sharing songs and puppet plays, taking time for self care, and of course, play! Parents will have the opportunity to join in discussion around child development, rhythm and family life, and embark in seasonal crafting. The fall session will begin early September!

Also, we are happy to share a new offering this year- Buttercup caregiver/infant classes! This class is for birth to crawlers. We will spend the morning having tea, observing the sweet babies, and discussing developmental phases, nutrition & wellness, sleep, siblings, and most importantly create a supportive community together.

More info and registration on our website! Comment “Sweet Peas” or “Buttercup” for a direct link.

Before we move on from October, take a peek into our wonder-filled Halloween Journey. Our 7th graders delighted our youngest students as they guided them through an adventure to lift a spell on the sinking island, save the king and queen, free the helpful dragon, solve the troll’s riddle, cross the wizard’s canyon, and navigate the waves! Our young adventurers left with their imaginations running wild and pockets filled with some handmade Halloween treasures too. We are always grateful for the gift of creativity shared by our 7th grade for the enjoyment of our community.

There has been much Halloween festivity today, including our all-school parade of costumes around the park! We love these times of seasonal celebration that bring our community together in creativity and joy! And if you recognize anything from Mr. Newman’s lost-and-found costume, you know where to find it 😉. Happy Halloween 🎃

Tradition and seasonal celebrations are a cornerstone in our rhythm in the kindergarten classrooms, and the birthday of each child certainly is a part of it all. But a Waldorf kindergarten birthday is more than a celebration - it is a time to honor every child as a part of our classroom, our community, and our world! There are many details that go into preparing for this special moment for each child, making it a day to remember with family joining in for the festivities. From the creation of a birthday book of wishes, to sharing a special snack, to hearing the unique story of each child - this is how we give meaning to these moments.
