6th grade heraldry created in preparation for the 27th Annual Rocky Mountain Medieval Games! This spring, as part of their studies of the Middle Ages, our students learned about knighthood and underwent many tasks as they trained for their own modern-day knighting. They studied chivalry and the vow one takes to help those in need, to protect the young and the old, to champion what is right, true, and good. They also interviewed an adult whose personal qualities they hoped to cultivate in themselves, as well as committed to deeds at home and in the community that benefited others. The knighting project culminated with the participation at the Medieval Games this week, giving our students the opportunity to study ancient history on a deeper level - physically, socially, and culturally. The Games are held in an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation, so we will not share the details! But as the class rises early this morning and makes their way back to Denver today, we can’t help but be proud of the character and growth they have displayed throughout this journey. May they always carry with them these valued lessons of courage, justice, honor, discipline, and community. Many thanks to @13moonsranch and @waldorfschoolontheroaringfork for hosting our young knights for the Games, banquet, and camping!

10th grade math in the spring sunshine. This past block’s seminar was focused on surveying. Each day, a surveyor for the Colorado Surveying Department led our lesson on a variety of techniques such as collecting plot points, elevation points, and making topographic maps. We are grateful for these real world hands-on experiences to bring our learning to life beyond the classroom!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The heart of every school day in our high school is an uninterrupted one-and-a half-hour seminar class focused on a core academic subject. Our seminars are organized into nine four-week blocks. These focused blocks allow our students the time and expanse to immerse themselves in a subject, allowing for deep exploration of the material and making way for sustained concentration and lasting learning.

If you’ve ever had a chance to witness a Waldorf middle school dance, you notice that there is just something different about our dances! EVERYONE is dancing. Often rotating partners, our students cha-cha, foxtrot, waltz, and twist the night away! Social dancing is a part of our Waldorf curriculum not only for the benefits of movement, but also as a wonderful social outlet as they navigate the middle school years. Through their practice, they learn how to move together with a partner - developing respect for one another, confidence in movement, and a healthy appreciation of each person’s best efforts- all the while having fun. Big thank you to The Schoolboys (a band comprised mostly of DWS alumni parents!) and to @shiningmountainwaldorf and @bouldervalleywaldorfschool for joining us! We are forever grateful to Vicki Hindes and all of the heart she has put into making this program what it is today ❤️.

Our Class of 2025 will take the stage one last time this week! Join us for this year’s senior class production of “Our Town” - a timeless and moving portrayal of life, love, and community in the small town of Grover’s Corners. Described as “the greatest American play ever written,” this classic unfolds in three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.” The performance runs about two hours with two short intermissions and is appropriate for all ages. Their performances for the community will be on Wednesday, May 14 at 4PM and Thursday, May 15 at 6PM. We hope to see you there before the curtain closes on this part of their journey at DWS.

Sending music, song, and heartfelt appreciation out to all of the dear mothers in our community on this Mother’s Day! We count ourselves lucky to be able to journey with you and your children each and every day ❤️! This week, we were especially grateful to celebrate together with our cherished Mother’s Day Tea in our kindergarten classrooms. With delightful treats, singing of Simple Gifts, and a special gift of bath salts made by our Larkspur kindergarteners, we filled our bellies and hearts with these moments of connection and community.

And they are off! Today, our 5th graders are on the field competing in the annual Pentathlon - a day full of fun, nobility, compassion, and community. While our students put forth great effort in achieving results in strength and speed, more important is their display of grace and form, striving not only for their individual self or city-state but for the good of all! After an opening ceremony complete with a recitation of odes to the gods, song, and eurythmy, they will compete in the long run, discus, sprint, wrestling, long jump, and javelin!

Each year, the 5th grade studies Greek civilization, learning about the government, history, mythology, and culture. As a culmination of their studies, each spring the students participate in a Pentathlon, which is an athletic event based on the Ancient Greek games. As with all aspects of our curriculum, the event is designed to relate directly to the students’ learning and development, bringing relevancy and enthusiasm for their studies. It is always wonderful to see all the new friendships forming and the many displays of grace throughout the day. Thanks to @shiningmountainwaldorf @bouldervalleywaldorfschool @waldorfschoolontheroaringfork @northforkschool and the Sun Mountain Community School from Santa Fe for joining the games!

In honor of our school’s 50th anniversary this year, DWS Educational Director Charlie Orphanides sits down with long-time Waldorf educator and administrator Betsy Doyle White to discuss how relevant and vital Waldorf education is in today’s times just as it was more than a century ago. Betsy shares her thirty-plus years’ worth of experience to reflect on Waldorf education’s founding principles and evolution through the years. What a beautiful and fun Pride celebration we shared as a school community with a rainbow themed parade! While our conversations in the classroom throughout the year integrate topics honoring and embracing human diversity, this week we celebrated Pride to sing our song of commitment to love, equality, and acceptance for all. As @awsna_waldorf ‘s eighth principle outlines —

“Waldorf schools pursue a path of human dignity, social justice, and equity in organizational, leadership, and pedagogical realms. Recognizing this path is one of spiritual, moral, and educational importance, schools celebrate the diversity of humankind. Schools are engaged in understanding and addressing the current and historical contexts of marginalization. These endeavors are rooted in Waldorf education’s founding vision, which included addressing contemporary social struggles within the context of the life of the school.”

So, this week we paraded to foster an environment where every student feels seen, valued, and respected. To teach our children the impact of being kind and empathetic. To encourage and support others to be themselves. To shape a more inclusive future within our school and the wider world.

Music unites us at a heart level. It reminds us of our human connection to one another - having to listen to each other, play our part, and come together in harmony. Last night, we were so grateful to have been able to experience music together with our grades 3 through 12 all together. With singing, recorders, and flute playing - we made connection and community. This is just one of the many reasons that music is a part of our curriculum for all grades 🎶!
