“Sixty seconds makes a minute,
Put a lot of kindness in it.
Sixty minutes makes an hour,
Work with all your might and power.
Twelve bright hours make a day,
Time enough for work and play.
Twelve dark hours through the night,
Give us sleep till morning light.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our 3rd graders have been learning all about time. From creating a sundial, to hearing stories about how the first clocks were imagined and used, to the practical practice of telling time- our approach to the lesson is always multifaceted, allowing the children to engage fully for a deeper understanding of the subject and the world all around them.

4th grade form drawings. In our Waldorf curriculum, art is integrated into our learning every day - whether through drawing, watercolor painting, sculpting, etc. The practice of form drawing may not be as familiar to some - it is the process of drawing shapes, lines, twists, turns, over/unders, and more. At first glance, it may just seem like it is a beautiful drawing. However, the benefits of form drawing far extend beyond the beauty. It is the process of form drawing that is the true gift, not just the result. Form drawing has many benefits when it comes to visual motor integration, spatial intelligence, social emotional skills, and crossing the midline - a wonderful exercise for the development of our whole selves.

This past Friday, we were able to come together in strength and courage as we celebrated Michaelmas with a field day. Michaelmas is a traditional Waldorf festival that is celebrated as the summer warmth and light dwindle, bringing challenges of the darker season ahead. It is about facing these challenges and fears in our lives, and finding our own strength and courage to overcome them. As an entire school community, our students displayed many acts of bravery as they rotated through field day stations including tug-of-war, balance beam pillow fights, obstacle courses, bear wrestling, human pyramid making, and of course the donut tree! It was an afternoon full of strength, courage, and of course lots of fun for all!

Soaking in the season. Journeying to those spaces where our senses come alive. Spending time where we can soak in each other’s company and the wonder all around. Adventuring together as we come to understand, connect, and become stewards of our natural world. All in a day with our 4th graders at their field trip to Golden Gate Canyon State Park 🍂

As an urban school, we are grateful for the numerous parks, gardens, and gulches nearby our campus that are just a short stroll away. Whether for plein air painting, botany, zoology, movement, games, and just being out in the wide open air- our students have ample opportunity to extend their learning in the beauty of the outdoors. 🌳// pictured here are three 12th graders painting the nearby surrounding trees of Harvard Gulch

Come experience a morning in our middle school on 10/10 and see firsthand how our curriculum integrates academics, arts, and athletics in educating the whole student. You’ll get to journey through part of a main lesson in each of our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes, and have opportunity for Q&A at the end of the morning. If you are interested in experiencing either our early childhood or high school curriculums, note we also have experiential mornings coming up for those programs as well. Find out more and register via our events page.

Seeing the beauty 🌲🌳. Our 12th grade students wrapped up their first block of art - plein air painting (painting outdoors). Practicing the arts is just one way we strengthen our ability to recognize the beauty of nature and to appreciate our environment. And leaving the four walls of our classrooms behind for the open air and surrounding trees of Harvard Gulch certainly engages our senses as we observe the world around us! Like everything we do, we strive to connect deeply with nature, fostering gratitude and reverence for the earth and its many gifts.

How can schools bring joy to the classroom, make learning fun, and increase self-confidence and well-being for students, families, and teachers alike? That is the precise question asked by educators in this summer’s edition of the Harvard Ed. Magazine: “A Space for Joy: Educators Talk About the Impact COVID Has Had on School Happiness.”

The Denver Waldorf School’s focus on joyfully educating the whole child long-predated the COVID-19 pandemic. For decades, DWS has inspired its students to become original thinkers, creative innovators, and compassionate world citizens — all the while creating a school environment that promotes joy, well-being, and a healthy emotional and intellectual life. This is just a peek into a few elements that unleash joyful learning at DWS.

A bountiful harvest nurtured by our 3rd graders! This week at our school plot at the Rosedale Community Garden, they harvested popcorn, squash, gourds, and beets. Along with Ms. Wolf, they will use the beets to prepare a dye bath for some spun wool for their weavings. The popcorn and squash will become a fun and delicious snack! Our students are cultivating a deep appreciation for the land and its many gifts - taking great care as they weed, water, harvest, and of course enjoy the fruits of their labor😊. On Friday, they will continue their learning as they work alongside farmers at Common Name Farm! As an urban school, we are grateful for the many opportunities surrounding us that allow for connection to the land and community we share 🌾.

Join us for Coffee in the Courtyard this Friday, immediately followed by a discussion with School Counselor Madhuri Deshmukh and Student Support Director Andrea Weid to learn more about how we can nurture a growth mindset in our children. During the presentation, we'll discuss how we can teach our kids to accept mistakes, encounter challenges, and problem-solve. Coffee will start pouring at 8:00 am and the workshop will immediately follow from 8:45 am - 9:45 am. We look forward to connecting with our community as we ring in the fall season!

Many of our classes have been spending time beyond the classroom this past week on fall field trips! Pictured here is our 7th grade class enjoying good company and good trails together as they journeyed through Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. They were able to spend time discovering the wild without the distractions and noise of the busy world around us (all the while building resilience and adaptability too!). Our annual class trips are a beloved aspect of our education - giving much opportunity for growth individually and collectively as a class community.
