Imagine asking your high schooler, “how was school today?” and receiving an engaged response. That is the wonder of The Denver Waldorf High School. In this week’s podcast episode, Kelly Molinet (School Director) and Charlie Orphanides (Education Director) take a deep dive into what makes our high school such an engaging, unique, and fulfilling experience. Our 8th graders have been working hard to compile a portfolio, showcasing their educational journey and who they are. These portfolios include examples of academic and artistic work over the last year and a half - including writing compositions, science lab work, paintings or drawings, etc. Their work very much tells a story of the heart or our Waldorf education - where their learning comes to life with depth, breadth, and experience. A portrait of who they are is captured not through standardized tests, but rather with creativity, wonder, and the development of their whole selves. If you have a chance, visit the middle school hall to admire them all!

Our Winter Fair is in just three weeks! Now is the time to pre-order your customizable wreaths, trees, and activity bracelets and pickup at the Winter Fair on Dec 7th! We look forward to coming together as a community in celebration while also benefiting our work in Waldorf education. Yes, our elementary students all play an instrument. They all practice the unitive art form of theater. And today, our 4th graders will all play their string instruments in costume during their final theater performance of their class play “Kalevala!” They do it all. It is always wonderful to see the many facets of our curriculum come alive together.

Meet Mr. Ochelle, a new music teacher at DWS! We are lucky to have him making music with nearly all of our students at DWS, as he teaches music for 1st through 12th grade! Moses is an experienced educator and started his career more than 15 years ago as a music teacher at the Nairobi Waldorf School. He also has been a Waldorf class teacher in the lower grades before most recently returning to a role as music teacher in Kenya.

By cultivating a warm and supportive classroom atmosphere, he aims to inspire a love for learning in his students, empowering them to become compassionate and responsible individuals who can make a positive impact on the world. We are grateful to have his talents, passion, and enthusiasm as he fills our school with the wonderful sounds of music.

This is the reason for our lantern walks each fall. To see how our own little light shines. To be that spark of light in the world for those around us. To shine bright together, illuminating our shared goodness. Last night, our younger grades braved the cold to light the path forward with their crafted lanterns. With the snow softly falling and sweet singing voices, it was a beautiful reminder of the light within each of us and the capacity of our community!

This is the reason for our lantern walks each fall. To see how our own little light shines. To be that spark of light in the world for those around us. We are so proud of our 18-year-old seniors who voted in their first election today! We are grateful to have their voices shaping the narratives that define our country. Today, seeing their enthusiasm to be active participants in our country, they give us hope.

When we vote, we stand on the shoulders of giants — those who organized, protested, and sacrificed so that “we the people” could express our hopes and desires. Voting is an act of affirmation, a conscious choice that influences our communities and honors the ongoing work of building a multicultural democracy.

To see our students live out the lessons in our curriculum - to meaningfully express their values, to participate in our democracy, and to engage thoughtfully with complex social issues - is a full circle moment for us as educators to see the importance of the work we do.

Signs of Día de los Muertos can be seen all throughout our school - from our main entrance with our school’s altar (ofrenda) to the form drawings created by our 3rd graders, we weave rich tradition and culture into our curriculum with much celebration. Día de los Muertos is a time for celebrating and honoring the lives of our deceased loved ones. It is a celebration that originated with the Aztecs, and is a tradition that allows us to honor our ancestors with presentations of food, sweets, joy, happiness, and hope for their well being. Many of our students celebrated with cutting papel picado, making paper flowers, painting sugar skulls, and enjoying pan de muerto. A big thank you to our teachers and families that helped bring these special traditions to our students.

We’ve had a full season of fall field trips, and we couldn’t be more grateful for our extended classrooms! Pictured here is our 7th grade class exploring the trails together during their camping trip to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. They were able to spend time discovering the wild without the distractions and noise of the busy world around us, all the while cultivating appreciation for nature. From scrambling on rocks at the campsite to exploring caves, it was a trip full of adventure, growth, and fun. Our annual class trips are a beloved aspect of our education - giving much opportunity for development individually and collectively as a class community.
