New Family Orientation

In a wonderful Waldorf collision of worlds, our own Katie Moses Swope (DWS communications manager and parent) caught up with actor Luke Slattery @luke.slatts at the Team USA Media Summit - and he sent this special message to our community! We were lucky enough to have Luke as a part of the 8th grade DWS graduating class of 2005 with Ms. Wolf as his class teacher from grade 1 to 8. Luke recently played the role of the coxswain in “The Boys in the Boat” movie and he served as a moderator in this week’s media summit for a panel with the top Team USA contenders for outdoor water events. It is always fun to remember his days on the stage and in the classroom at DWS! 🚣🏅

We love this time of year filled with new growth, moments of wonder, and many celebrations! Join us on Friday for our school’s spring celebration, the Festival of Life Renewed. It is meant to be inclusive for all living on our earth, celebrating the health-giving rhythms of the year and bringing attention to the efforts toward sustainably honoring our planet. Bringing together several spring traditions, we will gather and play, sing and dance as our whole school community unites in celebrating the renewal of life and the passing of winter.

All families are invited to join the students at 2:30 pm on the school playground to watch students sing, dance the maypole, celebrate Holi, and enjoy spring activities hosted by parent council. The festival activities will continue after school until 4:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there ☀️🌷.

Deep roots were certainly established at this weekend’s Deep Roots Bright Future Gala! How wonderful it was to celebrate our school together with good food, good company, and generous spirits. We are incredibly thankful for our community that shares the enthusiasm for Waldorf education and belief in this bright future for our children. Thanks to the many helping volunteer hands, business sponsors including our branch level partner @twinkletogether , business donors, individual donors, faculty & staff, old friends & new for coming together for this event. We are continually humbled and inspired by the giving nature of our community, and are thankful to be on this path forward together!

This is our Flying Hearts Circus Club! We thoroughly enjoyed this week’s performance of joy, enthusiasm, and love for circus arts! And while we of course marvel at the aerial stunts, tricks on the rolling globe, and mastery of the unicycle, we know that the performance is not the sole focus of their practice. Rather, it is the gained confidence, trust in others, perseverance, courage, and of course FUN in movement that is the heart of our circus! 🎪

The first day back from spring break and a solar eclipse?! What a day 🌑☀️🕶️! With approved glasses, cereal box viewers, and pinhole projectors, the solar eclipse was experienced in many ways by our students! What a wonderful opportunity it was to witness the marvels of our universe together.

This is our Artisan Courtyard - a place outside where our students imagine, create, and build through woodworking, stone carving, copper work and more. It is a place for us to live out our practical arts curriculum, making way for the development of grit, perseverance, and the hard work of our hands and hearts! As one of our students mentioned, we are incredibly grateful to have this outdoor space, but “it could be better” 😉 - and that’s where our DWS Gala comes in on 4/13!

We will be fundraising to reimagine this space as a beautiful and functional place for our students to both work and relax together. We are going to have fun together raising money for our wonderful school with a live auction, silent auction, and special appeal for the Artisan Courtyard. You can still grab your ticket on our website - ticket purchase includes dinner, dessert, late night snacks, and a drink ticket. Join us for an evening of community and celebration!

Spring is here, which means there has been a steady stream of set changes in our festival hall these past few weeks! We have all enjoyed coming together for the class plays from the 7th, 4th, and 6th grades.

The performing arts has long been a powerful medium for getting us into our bodies, whether it’s through dancing, plays, or musical concerts. Theater is the physical embodiment of story that literally and figuratively moves us as human beings. It is a key component of our Waldorf education with its integration of thinking, feeling, and willing. We all practice theater together, with every student in each grade participating in a class play. It gives each class the chance to collaborate together, developing not only the individual skill set of the individual student, but also the overall skill set of the class. There is a home and opportunity for every student to contribute - whether it’s on the stage or behind the scenes, we all come together for the unitive art form of theater.

This week, there was much spring celebration with story, song, egg hunts, special snacks, and some handmade treasures to take home too. We hope to cultivate that deep appreciation for the world around us with wonder and joy! Wishing all of our students a wonderful break soaking in the season 🌸.

This week our 3rd graders had the rare opportunity to witness two baby chicks hatching right before their very eyes. The students stood very patiently and excitedly, waiting and watching for 40 minutes while “Buster” busted its way out of the egg. The chick now joins 10 other chicks that will live in the classroom for a couple weeks before going to stay on a ranch, where the students will be able to visit later this spring for a field trip! It was a beautiful reminder of the gifts that spring brings with its renewal of life and new beginnings. 🌱🐣

They have each embarked upon an independent exploration of a topic of interest, and sought a mentor in the field to support their studies. While it is impressive to hear what skills they have learned and the knowledge they have gained, it is always most inspirational to hear what they have discovered about themselves through their work. The lineup of presentation topics include 2D Animation, Becoming a Doula, Hydroponic Gardening, Backcountry Safety, Renovating a British Roadster, Manga Creation, and Acoustic Engineering. We look forward to hearing more about each of their journeys.
