Did you know the first week of May is Screen Free Week? It’s a world-wide challenge that started to inspire those experiences that re-engage us with the world all around. When you walk into our kindergartens and grades classrooms, you will notice that we don’t use computers and screens for instruction. The Waldorf approach to education has always emphasized the importance of giving room to our children’s imaginations to blossom - to be open to receive the beauty of the world we live in, to be free to grow into their unique selves, to nurture their creative spirits - and time away from screens is a significant part of this belief. If you’re looking for screen free ideas for your children this week, @sparkle_stories (a wonderful resource and collection of original audio stories) has shared a blog post of 77 things to do instead of screens - comment SCREENFREE and we can send you a direct link.

In our Waldorf first grade classroom, we understand that children learn best when academics are conveyed through movement, storytelling, the arts, and other hands-on experiences that stir their emotions. We appreciate that beauty cultivates wonder and curiosity. We recognize that a lifelong love of learning comes from joy-filled days. Our young students not only understand the four processes of math and read books, they nurture that deep enthusiasm for the world all around them. Our students have been preparing over the last several weeks to learn various social dances including the cha cha, foxtrot, waltz, and swing, plus some twist and electric slide! Social dancing is a part of our Waldorf curriculum not only for the benefits of movement, but also as a wonderful social outlet as they navigate the middle school years! Through their practice, they learn how to move together with a partner - developing respect for one another, confidence in movement, and a healthy appreciation of each person’s best efforts- all the while having fun. Big thank you to The Schoolboys (a band comprised mostly of DWS alumni parents!) and to @shiningmountainwaldorf, @bouldervalleywaldorfschool, and @waldorfschoolontheroaringfork for joining us!

We foster a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world we share. Stewardship of the earth is an integral part of our curriculum and culture- believing that our work and commitment to environmental sustainability and social renewal can make a difference, together.

Just before the snow started falling 😅, our entire community gathered together to celebrate our spring festival, the Festival of Life Renewed. It is meant to be inclusive for all living on our earth, celebrating the health-giving rhythms of the year and bringing attention to the efforts toward sustainably honoring our planet.

Bringing together several spring traditions, we started with a performance of “Finlandia,” and then moved outside to dance around the Maypole and celebrate Holi. Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu spring holiday celebrated in India, Nepal, and in communities around the world. It is a festival of new beginnings, joy, laughter, love, and hope. Thanks to School Counselor Madhuri Deshmukh for sharing her tradition and the meaning behind Holi. We ended with activities hosted by Parent Council in celebration of the earth.

Festivals are an integral part to the rhythm of life for us- giving meaning as our days pass and providing that sense of something grander than oneself. It is always a wonderful reminder of the gifts of community as we lift each other through shared music, a joyful celebration, and care for all that surrounds us!

We were lucky enough to have Luke as a part of the 8th grade DWS graduating class of 2005 with Ms. Wolf as his class teacher from grade 1 to 8. Luke recently played the role of the coxswain in “The Boys in the Boat” movie and he served as a moderator in this week’s media summit for a panel with the top Team USA contenders for outdoor water events. It is always fun to remember his days on the stage and in the classroom at DWS! 🚣🏅
