Room to play. Room for imagination. Room for movement, song, story, and purposeful work. A space to honor childhood, and a place devoted to learning about the beautiful world all around us. Where seasons are celebrated, art and music are part of our every day, and nature is cherished. This is the beauty of our early childhood classrooms💫.
More than ever, students need an education that fosters resilience, adaptability, compassion, and confidence. They need an education where childhood is honored through creative play, a connection to nature, and purposeful work. They need a learning environment that prioritizes creativity and critical thinking to make a meaningful lesson. They need a human-centered approach that values being well-rounded and develops head, heart, and hands. This is the gift of Waldorf education - preparing students not just for college but for life beyond - with readiness to contribute to the world all around them.
A glimpse into what a multi-phase project looks like in our 5th grade. One of their main projects for this spring was to research a state of choice as a part of their North American geography studies. They were tasked with researching independently, creating a geographic map, writing about the original people that lived in the state, illustrating a facts page, orally presenting a biography of a historic person, constructing a beautiful diorama, and finally sharing their findings with our community! After all of their hard work was completed, they also celebrated by each bringing in a food that was representative of their state. It is always remarkable to watch the students take ownership and pride in their work. To see them enthusiastically sharing their knowledge and enjoying the process of learning is the most wonderful reward!
On this Fourth of July, we celebrate the becoming of America — the centuries-long work, struggle, and commitment to creating a multiracial democracy capable of delivering those unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to all who call America home. Although the Fourth of July holiday may emanate from the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence, neither the holiday nor our country are frozen in time. Collectively, we are a dynamic people who have the power to fulfill some of those unfulfilled promises from our country’s founding. Over the centuries, the American story has been written and re-written by ordinary and extraordinary people who organized, protested, campaigned, and bled to create a more inclusive country. We find courage, inspiration, and strength from all those who came before us, who loved each other and this country enough to push for an America that truly promotes equality for all. Our work is not done; our nation is still evolving, still becoming, still worthy of our commitment to that American dream. On this day, we celebrate all the Fourths of July to come. // chalk drawing by Mr. Reynolds
For this week’s podcast episode, we are grateful to be able to catch up with DWS alum, Ian Connolly from the class of 2015. He is a legal scholar, a whitewater river rafting guide, and a key contributor to community environmental nonprofits. He was recently awarded the Wyss Scholarship, which seeks to support a new generation of leaders focused on land conservation issues. Ian is currently a third-year law student at Lewis & Clark Law School with a focus on environmental and Native American law. We appreciated the chance to sit down with Ian and hear his reflections on how his Waldorf journey shaped who he is today. You can listen to the whole episode on Spotify or wherever you enjoy your podcasts- direct link in stories.
We are so very proud of our graduating class of 2024 and the places they’ll go! Over the years, for more than 98% of DWS graduates, that meaningful next step includes college — with 100% of our students who apply to college being accepted at one or more of their chosen schools. And although we can’t help but celebrate the quality of colleges that accepted our students, we are most proud of helping our students find a college that best suits their individual personalities, passions, and interests. With our Post-Secondary Guidance Counselor (aka Next Steps Coach), our students and families are provided the customized support in navigating and preparing for the next steps beyond DWS. We stand ready to applaud our graduates as they leverage their unique intellects, talents, and passions to thrive in not just college, but the journey of life ahead. // *College map highlights the universities in the past two years that accepted DWS graduates
What do we mean when we say we strive to develop the whole child? It means we learn through the head, heart, and hands. It means we not only have a rigorous academic curriculum, but we also have an emphasis on the arts and social well-being. It means that we work to build capacities within our children to foster wonder and a love of learning. So you will not only find us in our classrooms practicing math and reading and writing, but also making music, painting, moving our bodies, and creating with our hands. It means we wish to see our students grow wholly as human beings - creative, knowledgeable, balanced, and resilient - ready to contribute to the world that awaits.
The 2024 @awsna_waldorf conference officially kicked off last evening at @denverwaldorf with good food, good company, and that warm enthusiasm for the work we all do to bring Waldorf education to the world! It has been wonderful to connect with old friends and new, share stories and conversation, and be inspired by one another. We look forward to all that is to come as we explore the theme of Radiant Self, Resilient Students, and Robust Schools. Be sure to share your experiences at the conference using hashtag #waldorfconference2024
The creation of a main lesson book is a unique element of Waldorf education. Rather than using traditional textbooks, our students create their own main lesson book as a compilation of all of their findings during the block course. They combine art, writing, diagramming, and more to collectively demonstrate their understanding of the subject. It not only serves as documentation, but also as an active learning tool to synthesize the material from the lesson. Learning is not passive in our classrooms, but rather is alive, engaging, relevant, and deeply meaningful.
We are constantly in awe of the capacities and creativity of our students - this embroidery was created in our 4th grade class 🪡. It is always such a joy to witness the pride that comes with taking home a completed handwork project. Over many class periods emerges the very satisfying experience of creating beauty in the world. Through the patient work of their hands, the visualization of colors and ideas with their minds, and the awakening of their senses- our students develop not only the satisfaction of being able to create with their own two hands, but also self-confidence, an appreciation of the process, and connection to the world all around.
Experiencing math with movement, song, and rhythm. Our students progress from counting and understanding the quality of numbers to then skip counting and multiplication. But you won’t just find us at our desks memorizing math facts. We understand that young children need to move! It is with this active participation and engaged senses that the joy of learning comes to life - and their foundational mathematics soon become second nature!
