As part of our 11th grade Practicum experience, we are lucky enough to have DWS junior Oscar helping us with our social media these last couple of weeks! Each year, our juniors have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers and work on site with a mentor in the chosen field. Oscar is working with our marketing team to bring you these glimpses of our high school. So, here’s what’s going on in woodworking thanks to Oscar! We have over 40 different art classes integrated into our high school curriculum - from clay to woodwork, there is something for everyone!
New beginnings for our rising 3rd graders 🎻! In the 3rd grade, our students begin their practice with a string instrument of choice and learn music theory and note reading. Today, they had the opportunity to learn about the violin, viola, and cello from Ms. Fierer so they will be ready in the fall with their instrument of choice! Music is a part of our curriculum in all grades. It is taught not only for the joy it engenders, but also for its strong humanizing effects on students’ lives. We nurture the innate musicality within each of us, and together, we create harmony 🎼.

A peek at the 4th grade animal projects! As part of the animal block, each student was tasked with the assignment to research an animal of choice. They wrote an essay in cursive based on their research, gave an oral presentation to classmates, and created a diorama highlighting the animal’s habitat. This study of animals not only serves as an introduction to the world of science with the opportunity to practice research and the organization of ideas, but also develops an awareness and deeper connection to the natural world and its inhabitants. At a time when children are becoming more curious about the world and their relationship to it, this project always meets the students with energy and enthusiasm for their learning. We love seeing their creativity come to life!
While our 5th graders put forth great effort in achieving results in strength and speed during our Pentathlon, what was most notable was their display of grace, beauty, and form. It is always a day full of fun, community, nobility, and honor!

Each year, the 5th grade studies Greek civilization, learning about the government, history, mythology, and culture. As a culmination of their studies, each spring the students participate in a Pentathlon, which is an athletic event based on the Ancient Greek games. As with all aspects of our curriculum, the event is designed to relate directly to the students’ learning and development, bringing relevancy and enthusiasm for their studies. It is always wonderful to see all the new friendships forming and the many displays of grace throughout the day. Thanks to @shiningmountainwaldorf @bouldervalleywaldorfschool @waldorfschoolontheroaringfork @northforkschool and the student groups from Santa Fe for joining the games!
If you’ve ever wondered, “what’s up with PROM at a Waldorf high school?” - here is your peek into this past weekend’s prom! We may be a small high school, but we are big on celebration, energy, and festivity. There is no shortage of dancing or even giant jenga towers 😉. Come as you like and be as you wish! 💫
Did you know the first week of May is Screen Free Week? It’s a world-wide challenge that started to inspire those experiences that re-engage us with the world all around. When you walk into our kindergartens and grades classrooms, you will notice that we don’t use computers and screens for instruction. The Waldorf approach to education has always emphasized the importance of giving room to our children’s imaginations to blossom - to be open to receive the beauty of the world we live in, to be free to grow into their unique selves, to nurture their creative spirits - and time away from screens is a significant part of this belief. If you’re looking for screen free ideas for your children this week, @sparkle_stories (a wonderful resource and collection of original audio stories) has shared a blog post of 77 things to do instead of screens - comment SCREENFREE and we can send you a direct link.

Cheering on our middle school ultimate frisbee squad as they finish out their season today in a tournament! We have loved seeing their enthusiasm and joy of sport shine through this season. Go Spartans🌟!
In our Waldorf first grade classroom, we understand that children learn best when academics are conveyed through movement, storytelling, the arts, and other hands-on experiences that stir their emotions. We appreciate that beauty cultivates wonder and curiosity. We recognize that a lifelong love of learning comes from joy-filled days. Our young students not only understand the four processes of math and read books, they nurture that deep enthusiasm for the world all around them. Come experience our classroom for yourself - schedule a tour before summer break is here!
This past weekend’s middle school dance proved to be a night full of celebration, fun, and good moves! Our students have been preparing over the last several weeks to learn various social dances including the cha cha, foxtrot, waltz, and swing, plus some twist and electric slide! Social dancing is a part of our Waldorf curriculum not only for the benefits of movement, but also as a wonderful social outlet as they navigate the middle school years! Through their practice, they learn how to move together with a partner - developing respect for one another, confidence in movement, and a healthy appreciation of each person’s best efforts- all the while having fun. Big thank you to The Schoolboys (a band comprised mostly of DWS alumni parents!) and to @shiningmountainwaldorf, @bouldervalleywaldorfschool, and @waldorfschoolontheroaringfork for joining us!
