What You’ll Learn

The founding principles of Waldorf education are to help the child develop a strong sense of self along with a sense for the community.  The DWS Diversity and Inclusivity Committee works to help fulfill this mission in light of our various identities: racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and more.

During this webinar, the panel will also cover:

  • How and why we developed a Diversity and Inclusivity Committee
  • Past and current efforts
  • How you can become involved

About the Panel

About Vernon Dewey

Vernon has been working at The Denver Waldorf School since 2008, assisting in the 1st and 2nd Grades before taking on the 1st Grade as class teacher in 2010. He attended Evergreen State College and graduated with a Master’s in Education and a Waldorf Teaching Certificate from Antioch University of New England in 2010. In addition to teaching at The Denver Waldorf School, currently as 8th Grade Teacher, Vernon also serves as a founding member and co-chair of the school’s Diversity Committee.

About Magally Luna

Nearly 20 years, Magally joined the DWS community to teach Spanish. Today, she serves in the elementary school as our 4th grade teacher. “I bring a diverse curriculum to my class of cuties,” she says. She has been on the school’s D&I Committee since its inception, starting with conversations with Laurie Clark in the Morning Glory classroom. She is the founder and co-chair of AWSNA’S BIPOC affinity group, — supporting Waldorf teachers of color throughout the nation — and she has taught BIPOC stories, songs, and movement from the Americas at several national conferences.

About Mahdyeh Nowkhandan

Mahdyeh Nowkhandan is a new DWS parent and member of the D&I Committee, and has recently become one of the leads on the new Denver Waldorf Racial Justice Parent Group. She has a background in advocacy work and racial justice, as well as elementary education — including social-emotional and special education. She is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award, and still she views herself as a life-long learner, non-expert, and an always growing member of the BIPOC community.

About The Bridge

The Bridge is a bimonthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. By connecting one another, we aim to join in the worldwide effort to educate for humanity.

About The Denver Waldorf School

The Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human, cultivate lifelong curiosity, and inspire a love for the world. Can you tell what our 5th graders are making? As part of their studies of North American geography, they gladly got their hands messy to create this giant map! Art is integrated into all areas of our curriculum to bring learning to life. Our students learn not only through their intellect, but also with their hearts and their hands. Creativity, joy, and experience all make for a meaningful lesson, and moreover a love for learning.
The first evening of Senior Project Presentations is in the books! What an incredible showcase of dedication, creativity, and innovation thanks to our Class of 2026. Be sure to join us again tonight at 5pm for round two!

The Senior Project is an opportunity for our students to pursue a new area of interest or something that will stretch their abilities- intellectually, physically and/or emotionally. After many, many months of hard work and determination, they each present their journey to the community - sharing their challenges, new learnings, and growth. With topics ranging from upcycling clothing, to stained glass, to becoming a polyglot, to designing a myoelectric prosthetic arm, it is always awe-inspiring to hear how they each persevere, push themselves to new limits, and find their way with patience and persistence. May we all remember to journey as they do with open hearts!

Many thanks to our high school faculty and community mentors for their unwavering support in guiding our seniors to complete these outstanding projects.
Senior Project presentations are almost here (starting TONIGHT!) — and are not to be missed. As a K-12 Waldorf school, our seniors are not only a product of this education, they are a part of it. They are a model for all students following in their footsteps, and this senior class has consistently proven themselves as humans worthy of imitation.

They’ve embodied collegiality and heart through sport, and lifted spirits through their voices and presence on stage. They’ve brought wonder and awe in their interpretation of saints, kings, and princesses during festivals, field days, and joyful classroom celebrations. They’ve teamed up and gifted to others through baking, crafting, and merchantry. They’ve skillfully expressed themselves — fiercely and vulnerably — through the art they’ve produced with their hands and spoken in words. They demonstrate, for us all, the joy that’s achievable when you access your will and your community — when you are capable and never truly alone.

These are humans worth knowing; humans who change those who do. As much as they will be missed (which is a lot), if this is how they show up as high schoolers — on the court, in a festival hall, in classrooms and hallways — one can only feel excitement about how they will show up out in the world.

Now is our time to show up for them now…while also treating ourselves to the fruits of the culmination of this education in a 12th grader and giving us a taste of the gift that their humanity is in this world.

What a joy it is to see the enthusiasm and love for circus arts! Congratulations to all of our performers in today’s Circus Club performance. And while we of course marvel at the aerial stunts, juggling on the rolling globe, and mastery of the unicycle, we know that the performance is not the sole focus of their practice. Rather, it is the gained confidence, trust in others, perseverance, courage, and of course FUN in movement that is the heart of our circus! 🎪
The push to return to pen and paper may be growing- but this has always been a mainstay in our Waldorf curriculum. While you won’t find Chromebooks in our elementary classrooms, you will find pencil and paper. You will find beauty in the word. You will find conduits of creativity. So yes, while Waldorf schools prioritize the exercise of handwriting, art, and bringing a page to life for the many cognitive and developmental benefits, we also practice it to nurture the soul of our holistic learning.
Magical decor, delicious food, spirited laughter, and an incredible community - this is what makes an enchanted evening 🧚✨🌿 . What a wonder-filled celebration it was this weekend at our Enchanted Garden Spring Fundraiser! We are endlessly thankful for our community that shares the enthusiasm for Waldorf education and this honored journey for the children.

Hosting this event at our school made for much involvement from our Development Committee, extra hours from faculty and staff, and of course volunteerism from our wonderful parents - you truly are the magic makers! Many thanks to the countless supporters who donated to our silent auction and also our business sponsors (including a special shout out to our gold level partners for their generous support including Frakktel, @reson8_wellness_studio, and @ourhighestgoodwellness ❤️).

We are continually humbled and inspired by the giving nature of all those around us - lighting this path forward, together 💫.
Our basketball season may have come to an end, but we couldn’t be more proud of our girls and boys teams for their dedication and enthusiasm for the game. It is always a joy to celebrate the milestones, journey, and love of sport with our student athletes! Congratulations to all of our players and also to those who were recognized at this week’s All-League game and ceremonies. This season, we had a number of players who participated in the All-League game and honored with the following:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honorable Mention: Sula Schuyler, Lara Gregory, Mila Ivano, Sarab Baidwan, Seth Carr, and Morgan Graham-Dickerson
1st Team All-League (top 5 players in the league): Cayden Quinn and Henry Lottridge

Let’s hear it for our Spartans! 🏀🌟
A peek into History Through Architecture 🏛️. In this Grade 12 block, students explored how the structures humans have built mirror the thinking, values, and innovations of their time. They surveyed architecture from prehistory through the Industrial Revolution, with students culminating their studies by selecting a modern architect to explore in greater depth. To bring their learning to life, in groups they collaborated to design and build original structures inspired by those influences. This is the result - creative models that connect past and present in inspiring ways.

Take a look at their incredible work and come see the full display in the high school! #waldorfeducation
It’s almost here! This Saturday, we will come together in our transformed Festival Hall for our Enchanted Garden Spring Fundraiser. We will cheers with garden-themed cocktails, bid on incredible silent auction items, feast on delicious eats, enjoy laughter and conversation with community, move on the dance floor, and share our commitment for this Waldorf education. It’s more than just a party - it’s an opportunity not only to live into this education’s commitment to social renewal, but to nurture the seeds of imagination, connection, and curiosity in every child we serve. Join us for this magical evening of celebration, wonder, and purpose - get your tickets TODAY!

On this week’s podcast episode, we turned over the mic to four seniors at The Denver Waldorf High School! In this candid conversation, these students share their perspectives on being well-prepared and well-supported to thrive in college and beyond. With Coen describing DWS high school as “the best years of my education by leaps and bounds,” this discussion covers everything from the unique structure of our high school honors curriculum, to their feelings going through the college application process, to the lessons they will take forward from their time at DWS. We are grateful for these four students for sharing their wisdom and experiences 🌟. You can listen to the whole episode on Spotify or wherever you like to podcast.
