A micro-adventure for our 8th graders to close out their block on graphing - and yes, this was the finale to a math block 😉

They ventured to the woods for a simplified version of orienteering, navigating their way from checkpoint to checkpoint with a compass, their problem solving skills, and a lot of teamwork. Orienteering gave them an exercise to apply their graphing skills into real life - using direction, distance, and coordinates to navigate from one clue to the next. Along the way, they soaked in the beauty of the aspens, practiced navigating unfamiliar terrain, and challenged themselves to build self-reliance.

When lunchtime came, they continued their newfound independence in the wild by preparing themselves a hot lunch in small groups - tacos, burgers, bratwurst all tasted delicious under the open sky!

It was a day to collaborate, enjoy the season, and put practical wilderness skills into action. As one student remarked, “I’ve never felt so alive!”

If you’re curious to learn more about our middle school program, join us for our upcoming Open House on 10/22 from 8:45-10:45 am! Comment “Open House” for more info and to RSVP

Last Friday, our school came together to celebrate Michaelmas. Michaelmas is a traditional Waldorf festival that reminds us to find our own strength and courage to overcome fear in our lives. This year, we celebrated with a school-wide pageant to embrace the underlying meaning of this festival. Our students and staff came together to act out a story of light overcoming darkness, with acts of service bringing to life the spirit of Michaelmas. Through service to others and service to land, our pageant ended with each class sharing the virtues they learned - to be a reminder that within each of us, the light may thrive.

We will move forward in the weeks ahead sharing our light and goodness as we continue our works of service within our community and carrying forward the spirit of Michaelmas!

Shabbat in our 3rd grade sukkah! Together, our students built a beautiful sukkah and celebrated Sukkot, learning about the ancient tradition of gathering, sharing, welcoming others, and giving thanks for the harvest.
In each elementary grade, a literary theme exists to serve as a starting point for many language arts lessons. For the 3rd grade, stories of the ancient Hebrew people bring their learning to life through story, music, tradition, and experience. This past week, our study of Sukkot connected beautifully with our study of shelters and homes as we explore what we build, what we need, and what truly makes a place feel like home.

A sukkah is intentionally simple and impermanent. It reminds us that home is not only made by strong walls, but by the people gathered within them. A place to share food, welcome others, look up at the sky, and celebrate together.

Through experiences like these, learning comes alive - rooted in curiosity, global consciousness, and respect for the many traditions that shape our unique human stories.

Festival time is always an abundant time in our Waldorf kindergartens! This week, each of our kindergarten classes will celebrate the season with their families, classmates, and teachers during our annual harvest festival.

Over the weeks prior, they worked diligently to craft harvest crowns, bake bread, churn butter, and bake apple crisp. On the morning of their harvest festival, they press apple cider and share in good food, good company, and rich tradition- nourishing both our community spirit and our sense of the seasonal rhythms🍁. It’s more than just a celebration, it’s deep connection to one another and the world we share!

Come experience the intentionality and warmth of our curriculum and classrooms on 10/22 from 8:45 - 10:45 am. The Denver Waldorf School provides a preK-12 curriculum that enriches, inspires, and develops the whole child. Our studies deliberately build upon themselves — month to month, year to year, serving as stepping stones to greater knowledge, self confidence, and wholeness. As our students grow in mind and body, they acquire the tools to contribute to the broader world, the heart to care for each other and their communities, and the wisdom to be lifelong learners.

The morning will begin with coffee and a welcome before families join guided classroom observations in their child’s division. Visitors will have the opportunity to quietly experience the rhythms, relationships, and hands-on learning that define a Waldorf education.

Following the classroom visits, families will gather for a leadership panel and Q&A with school directors, who will share more about our developmental approach, curriculum, student support, high school experience, and college pathways.

Join us to see firsthand how we integrate critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and artistic expression to prepare our students to make meaningful and relevant contributions to the world we share. Comment “Open House” for more information and to RSVP!

This is why we do an all high school camping trip in the first month of school. It’s a wonderful way to set our intentions as a community - to give back to the natural world, to forge strong friendships across all of our grades, to make space for the quiet (and the music!) - and build that solid foundation for the growth ahead. Our 3 days spent at Cherry Creek State Park were filled with exploration, service work, archery, fishing, plenty of games, music, laughter, and togetherness! These simple days in the wild remind us of the power of slowing down, looking up, and looking within.

Class trip season is upon us! As we find ourselves back in the classroom together in the beginning of the year, it is often a time when we find ourselves heading outside of the classroom for overnight field trips. Last week, our 5th graders adventured to the YMCA of the Rockies for a few days of exploration in the wild, cooking, playing games, cherishing time as a group in a cozy cabin, and trying new things together!

We cherish these opportunities for our students to grow both individually and as a class community. We look forward to hearing their stories of wonder, challenge, togetherness, gratitude, and adventure for many days to come!

It was a “Traveling Tuesday” for our 3rd grade yesterday! As an urban Waldorf school, we appreciate the many opportunities to explore the world around us. This week, they took an adventure on the city bus to nearby Dan’s Garden on the University of Denver campus. As part of their lessons on time, they made their own paper sundials and then were able to observe in real life the giant sundial at DU. Bonus was being able to picnic in the beauty of the garden. 🌿

There is so much learning that stems from these small adventures. They learn how to greet people, move through our community safely, pay attention to one another, navigate public transportation, and be respectful and confident out in the wider world. And a big thank you to all the car and truck honks of encouragement along the way :)!

This is what an early start to the school day looks like for our seniors - an observation of the sunrise as part of their studies in optics, combined with a lesson in plein air painting (painting outdoors)!

Their morning spent at Red Rocks is a perfect example of our interdisciplinary curriculum, which intentionally weaves lessons in the sciences, humanities, social studies, and the arts. Though a cloud-covered sky offered a softer, more subtle palette than the vibrant sunrises we’re accustomed to in Colorado, it created its own opportunity to observe the ways light and color transform the landscape.

This adventure at dawn gives way to a meaningful lesson in the principles of light and an appreciation of both the beauty and science behind the daily transformation of the sunrise. Add on a pancake breakfast out to follow, and this has become a senior tradition in itself!

Next up in our “What’s up with...?” series as we explain the many facets of Waldorf education - today, we’re breaking down why you will find so much handwriting (and cursive!) in our classroom lessons.

Handwriting and cursive may be making a comeback, but it has always been a mainstay in Waldorf curriculum. While you won’t find Chromebooks in our elementary classrooms, you will find pencil and paper. You will find beauty in the word. You will find conduits of creativity. So yes, while Waldorf schools prioritize handwriting for the many cognitive and developmental benefits, we also practice it to nurture the soul of our holistic learning.

Yesterday, our 7th and 8th graders adventured into the foothills for a lesson from the trees at the Genesee Challenge Course.

With a harness, some ropes, and plenty of enthusiastic encouragement from their classmates, they each discovered new boundaries within themselves. The heart-pounding moments and “I’m scared!”s were very much present, but so were many moments of bravery that followed.

It was wonderful to witness their growth, courage, and teamwork emerge throughout the course as they cheered on one another, pushed past their comfort zones, and enjoyed the beautiful day under the open sky.

We’re grateful for these experiences that stay with us long after the lesson comes to an end!
