The Denver Waldorf School is honored to host renowned Waldorf researcher and author Douglas Gerwin for his lecture Teens, Sex and Waldorf Education. About Teens, Sex & Waldorf Education

Teens, Sex & Waldorf Education is a potent thought-provoking lecture inspired by Dr. Gerwin’s recently published book Trailing Clouds of Glory—Essays on Human Sexuality and the Education of Youth in Waldorf Schools. This book has been twelve years in the making, but you can glean insights on parenting today’s teens in this valuable 90-minute lecture. Not a parent to teenagers? Parents of children of all ages are welcome and will greatly benefit from Dr. Gerwin’s wisdom as he is a highly acclaimed lector in the DWS community and beyond.

About Waldorf Expert Dr. Douglas Gerwin

Dr. Douglas Gerwin is a thought-leader in the Waldorf world and renowned expert on teaching teens in alignment with Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy on education. He serves the Center for Anthroposophy as the Director, High School Program Chair and member of its Pedagogical Advisory Council for which prepares high school teachers for the classroom and is a guest teacher and adviser to some 40 Waldorf high schools in the United States and abroad. He is also the Executive Director of the Research Institute for Waldorf Education.

Dr. Gerwin has taught history, literature, German, music and life science at the college and high school levels for some 35 years. He has also either co-authored or edited nine books on Waldorf education, including Survey of Waldorf Graduates, a comprehensive study of Waldorf alumni spanning more than 60 years.

In addition to being active as a high school and adult education teacher, Dr. Gerwin is a Waldorf graduate and endeared supporter of The Denver Waldorf School.

RSVP For Dr. Gerwin’s Lecture by Monday March 6

Dr. Gerwin’s lecture takes place on Thursday March 9, but please RSVP no later than Monday, March 6. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and confirm the number of attendees in your family. We’ll provide childcare for children ages 4 and older; childcare costs (to be paid directly to the care provider upon drop off) are $10 for one child or $15 per family. All are welcome to this FREE lecture, so please feel free to spread the word.

Yes, our high school students study literature, the constitution, quadratic equations, organic chemistry, and computer programming. They play in the orchestra and sing in chorus. They perform a class play and work hard with grace and resilience on our sports teams. But did you know they are also proficient in basketry?!

Basketry is a part of our practical arts curriculum in the 9th grade, serving as a foundation for copper work, stone carving, and more. To be able to coordinate with both head and hands to give shape and life to a medium requires intention, attention to detail, perseverance, and adaptability. Yes, they get to take home a functional and beautiful basket. But moreover, they will carry forward their developed character and skills for a lifetime!

Yesterday afternoon, our students had the rare treat of hearing about Josh’s life and asking him all of their burning questions about his comedy work, his time as a volunteer at a zoo in Senegal, his Paralympic soccer experience, living with cerebral palsy, his journey on America’s Got Talent, all of his favorite foods, and his memoir, “Something To Stare At”.

From stages across the world to our music room at DWS on a Tuesday afternoon, Josh reminded us all to embrace who we each are and to always love laughter! We’re incredibly grateful to Josh for sharing his stories, his perspective, and plenty of laughs with our middle school community ❤️.

Our studies deliberately build upon themselves — month to month, year to year, serving as stepping stones to greater knowledge, self confidence, and wholeness. As our students grow in mind and body, they acquire the tools to contribute to the broader world, the heart to care for each other and their communities, and the wisdom to be lifelong learners.

The morning will begin with coffee and a welcome before families join guided classroom observations in their child’s division. Visitors will have the opportunity to quietly experience the rhythms, relationships, and hands-on learning that define a Waldorf education.

Following the classroom visits, families will gather for a leadership panel and Q&A with school directors, who will share more about our developmental approach, curriculum, student support, high school experience, and college pathways.

Our students explored the fascinating forces of electricity and magnetism by first constructing microphones and then transforming them into headphones! They don’t just study the principles in theory, they get to bring them to life. Through hands-on experiments, they are able to observe firsthand, developing a deeper understanding of the science around us every day! It’s a lesson that goes well beyond memorization as they discover why and how things work in the world.

Our students study abroad through our global exchange program. They take on real-world junior year practicums. They dive deep into a passion through their senior project. They experience academics through block teaching, challenge themselves with all honors-level coursework, continue to develop their creative capacities through integrated arts, and apply their learning through outdoor expeditions. We ask students to dig deep, work hard, and collaborate with each other.

We’re proud of our students’ strong academic achievements (our Class of 2026 alone earned an average of about $430,000 per student in merit scholarships for college!!), but even prouder of the people they become. We believe that a meaningful education goes beyond academic preparation. As educators, we strive to inspire, challenge, and awaken students to the world around them and to their life’s purpose, well beyond college.
