DWS will host a Book Fair March 22nd, 23rd & 24th to kick off our spring Read-a-Thon supporting the DWS Library. Proceeds from the Book Fair & Read-a-Thon will fund an audio book program called Learning Ally as well as needed materials and supplies for the library.
“Learning Ally offers students with learning differences access to any book in audio format. This is a wonderful resource that gives the joy of reading back to struggling readers the joy of reading. For students with reading difficulties, reports are especially challenging for them to complete because their reading speed is slow. Additionally, their energy is going into decoding the text at the expense of comprehension. Students who may want to use audio books for their research are frequently unable to find their text in audio format. This means they must read printed material; but reading for these students is laborious, time consuming, exhausting and stressful. By using audio books students can gather information in a way that is supportive and in line with their learning style thereby reducing stress. Ultimately this also has an impact on the quality of their work as their comprehension rises and they have additional time to dedicate to their writing.”
