Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nIn his book\, A Whole New Mind\, Daniel Pink describes the new skills for the workers who will be needed in the future\, skills that go beyond a traditional academic education: \n\nDesign\nStory\nSymphony\nEmpathy\nPlay\nMeaning\n\nRudolf Steiner spoke of Waldorf education in a similar way.  He said\, “The heart of the Waldorf method is that education is an art\, it must speak to the child’s experience. To educate the whole child\, his heart and his will must be reached\, as well as the mind.” \nWe integrate these skills into every lesson at The Denver Waldorf School. As the school’s mission statement reads\, DWS awakens and inspires students’ critical thinking\, emotional intelligence\, and artistic expression\, preparing them to bring relevant contributions to the world.  The Waldorf school’s varied and integrated curriculum gives students the opportunity to develop\, first and foremost\, abilities and capacities.  In our classes the ability to create\, to think\, and to do are paramount.  Learning which builds toward understanding of the whole is the goal rather than the accumulation and memorization of facts themselves. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Cynthia Bennett\nCynthia Bennett worked as a Waldorf high school educator teaching mathematics and science for 17 years at the Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda\, Maryland. Subsequently\, she led the faculty there as College Chair for four years\, before leaving to take up adult education. She spent another 12 years educating four cohorts of Waldorf teachers\, and introducing numerous parents to Waldorf philosophy and education through the NOVA Institute. \nShe now works as a Waldorf educational consultant. Cynthia came to Denver in 2017\, and since then has been active at The Denver Waldorf School leading parent and faculty studies\, mentoring teachers\, and supporting the school in many ways. She also is a grandparent of a DWS second grader. \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a monthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. By connecting one another\, we aim to join in the worldwide effort to educate for humanity. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. \nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nWe are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? Schedule an in-person tour of our Denver campus or join us online during our virtual events.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This month on The Bridge\, Waldorf educator Charlie Orphanides takes us on a brief journey through the field of movement\, where we will move a bit ourselves and discuss the increasing relevance and indeed necessity of movement in our schools and in the lives of children in general. \nDate: March 24\, 2021 \nTime: 7pm MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring the presentation\, Charlie will cover why and how we move in our Waldorf schools—specifically\, speaking to the influence and impacts of the whole human being\, from the base physiology to subtle neural activity and even into the realm of the spiritual or finer aspects of the human experience. \nFrom Gym and Games classes to the art of Eurythmy\, from handwork and woodwork to circle time and jump roping multiplication tables\, Waldorf education moves each student in diverse ways. With deep intentionality\, Waldorf teachers are also mindful of how they move\, the postures they hold\, and even the ways in which they uphold their stamina to work with seemingly tireless children all day long. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Charlie Orphanides\nTruly a mover\, Charlie is an integral part of The Denver Waldorf school faculty\, and came to our school after teaching at Waldorf schools in Boulder\, New York City\, and New Hampshire. He has been teaching for a decade\, and began his career fortified with an English degree from Lewis and Clark College\, a master of education degree and Waldorf teacher certification from Antioch University—complemented with many trainings in movement\, art\, and meditation studies. Charlie is also a graduate of a 5-year training program in “Spacial” Dynamics\, certified in Bothmer Gymnastics (based on exercises from the first gym teacher at the first Waldorf school)\, and has been teaching circus for more than 7 years. \nAway from the classroom\, Charlie’s hobbies include gardening\, fixing and building things\, running\, bicycling\, playing with his two sons\, reading\, writing\, studying a variety of healing modalities\, and playing guitar and piano (along with anything else with which it’s fun to make music!). SUMMARY:Senior Projects
DESCRIPTION:A highlight of the senior year at a Waldorf School\, the Senior Project culminates in an oral presentation before classmates\, faculty\, friends and family. This year\, we are live streaming the presentation over two evenings. \nDate: April 7th and April 8th\nTime: 6:30pm\nLocation: Online via Facebook Live \nWednesday\, April 7th\nMargaret Hecox—Custom by MH\nKobi McMillen—To Read Music: Piano & Guitar\nMorgan Young—Aeronautics on the Small Scale\nAlexie Pearson—Art\, Community\, Crafts\nCarter Inmann—So I Built an Electric Guitar\nEllexus Glockner—Illusions of the Mind \nThursday\, April 8th\nJohn Kauffman—My Journey Into Automotive Mechanics\nEllysia Black—Digital Art & Social Economics\nJack Carr—Young Dumb Entrepreneur\nJessica Short—Mental Illness Artwork\nCalvin Polon—DJing & Producing\nAlex Reynolds-Scheel—Sarah Tonin \nWhat are Senior Projects?\nThe senior year at a Waldorf school is designed to be a synthesis of the students’ education and a preparation for their next step in life. As twelfth graders stand on the edge of adulthood\, they long for independence and yet are still unsure of their place in the world. The Senior Project is designed to help students begin to bridge this gap\, preparing them for college studies and professional work in the world. Students must design a project that forces them to pursue a new area of interest or something that will stretch their abilities\, mentally\, physically and/or emotionally. \nThe individual projects are approved by the High School faculty and supported by an adult mentor who is an expert in the chosen field of endeavor and preferably someone outside of the familiar school community. The project scope is equivalent to one main lesson block\, or about eighty hours of work\, and typically extends over many months of the school year. The project culminates in a formal presentation of learning to the community.

The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education. We are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? We will close with a live Q&A moderated by DWS School Counselor Jenny Thompson. \nDate: May 13\, 2021 \nTime: 7pm MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nPlease register to reserve a seat. \nAbout TC Tolbert\nTC Tolbert identifies as a trans and genderqueer feminist\, collaborator\, mover\, and poet. And\, s/he’s a human in love with humans doing human things. S/he is author of Gephyromania (Ahsahta Press 2014 and to be re-released in 2021 by Nightboat Books)\, five chapbooks\, and co-editor of Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics (Nightboat Books 2013). TC was awarded an Academy of American Poets’ Laureate Fellowship in 2019 for her/his work with trans\, non-binary\, and queer folks as Tucson’s Poet Laureate. Learn more at www.tctolbert.com. \nAbout Theo Isoz\nTheo Isoz (they\, them\, theirs) is pretty sure that talking about sex is going to change the world. No really\, it is. Conversations about sexuality radically address the core of relationships\, identity\, values\, goals\, and pleasure which allows people to know and respect themselves as well as the experiences\, bodies\, and selves of others. Theo is a sex educator and believes deeply in what they do. In recent years\, Theo has particularly focused their work on creating conversations that support youth when navigating their sexuality and media\, developing LGBTQIA+ inclusive sex education and human services practices\, advocating for young people to have autonomy over their bodies and pleasure\, and facilitating groups for people whose relationship to their sexuality has been harmed by conservative religious messages. They work for the Colorado Sexual Health Initiative at the Department of Human Services to provide sex education to young people involved in human services systems. In their off-time\, Theo crafts and enjoys the menagerie of pets and humans that fill their home with chaos. \nAbout Dylan Wilder Quinn\nDylan Wilder Quinn (they/he) believes closeness is necessary to dismantle oppression. Their combination of life experiences as a childhood abuse survivor and holding both oppressed and oppressor identities informs their liberation work. They are especially passionate about bringing fellow trans\, nonbinary\, queer\, masculine\, and disabled white people along in seeing how our own liberation and mental wholeness is deeply tied to ending white supremacy while centering POC liberation. They are a part of a team called Holistic Resistance\, founded by Aaron Johnson and Porsha Beed. We will also go into detail on the timing of each phase of the process and briefly discuss how best to support your student now for what is relevant to them. Key takeaways include: \n\nPeace of mind knowing more about the process\nKnowing where to direct your high school student’s focus and energy now\nUnderstanding the relevance of each part of the application and your student’s role in each part\n\nAbout College Nights\nOur monthly College Nights series focuses on different aspects of the college and post-secondary application process. Laura Shope designed each evening to answer questions and support parents and students in the college application process.  These meetings are open to all\, although probably most useful to the grade listed with each topic. \n\nOctober 7th—Application Process 101 (Grades 10 and 11)\nNovember 4—SAT and ACT (Grades 10 and 11)\nDecember—No meeting\nJanuary 6—Supporting Your Student through the Process (Grades 10 and 11)\nFebruary 3—Paying for College (Grades 10 \, 11\, and 12)\nMarch 3—Making Choices (Grades 10 and 11)\nApril 21—College Engagement and Success (Grade 12)\nMay 4—Preparing to Apply & Making the Most of Summer (Grade 11)\n\nAbout Laura Shope\nLaura Shope came to DWS in 2021 via the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor\, where she served as the High School Student Support Coordinator and High School Administrator for the past three years\, and a parent in the Waldorf community for more than 17 years. She has extensive training in career development and personal coaching\, along with having recently completed her Waldorf High School Teacher Training through the Center for Anthroposophy. Her plans for working with our students and faculty include creating a rich program of self-reflection\, support\, and clarity around the decisions the students make for their plans after high school. \nLaura is a passionate artist and works with stone\, clay\, wood\, weaving\, and plaster to create abstract forms. She and her husband\, Dale Jensen\, are outdoor enthusiasts and look forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer. They have two sons\, Wilder and Corbin\, who attended Waldorf schools from preschool through grade 12 (Corbin will graduate from RSSAA in 2022).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf High School\nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. Scroll down to hear from a few of our faculty members. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery el_id=”gallery-153447″ medias=”4695433\,4695439\,4695434\,4695438\,4695436\,4695440\,4695437\,4695526″ gutter_size=”1″ media_items=”media|lightbox|original\,icon|xl” screen_lg=”1000″ screen_md=”600″ screen_sm=”480″ single_width=”6″ single_overlay_opacity=”50″ single_h_align=”center” single_padding=”2″][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Masks required.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf Middle School\n6th Grade: The spirit of conquest and the rule of law\nA time of collaboration\, self-direction\, grounding\, and emerging\, sixth grade marks the emergence of adolescence and the struggle between light and dark. Sixth graders take the first step toward critical thinking as they study Roman civilization and the Middle Ages\, as well as astronomy\, physics\, and mineralogy — subjects met with discernment and insight to encourage a healthy interest in\, and compassion for\, the world. \n7th Grade: Questing into the unknown\nLooking outward while feeling inward\, seventh graders are expressive and forceful\, challenging authority and exploring limits. They seek to assert independence and find their place\, while remembering to provide light for those behind them. During this time of discovery\, resistance\, optimism\, chaos\, and order\, we explore the Renaissance and examine truth and beauty via scientists\, religious reformers\, and artists. \n8th Grade: Extending one’s horizons\nBy eighth grade\, students have gained a well-rounded general picture of humanity and the universe. It is a  time of self-confidence\, interest in the world\, self-love\, and service to others. The elementary education has engaged their hearts\, wills\, and minds\, forming the basis for real learning throughout their lives. The final year of elementary school brings previous experiences to a new peak\, enabling students to enter fully and potently into their own time.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado.
