This year is the beginning of a multi-year relationship with their teacher. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Nancy Blanning\nNancy Blanning is an early childhood educator with a special interest in movement and has been working with young children in Waldorf settings for nearly 40 years. She has served as Denver Waldorf School faculty since 1987 as both lead kindergarten teacher and educational support staff. Nancy is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national and international Waldorf early childhood conferences. She is co-director of Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training at Sunbridge Institute in Spring Valley\, NY\, and is guest faculty at other teacher training programs. Nancy has also traveled widely as mentor and consultant to Waldorf schools in the US and Canada. She is editor of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association journal\, Gateways\, has edited several books\, and is author of Walking with Our Children: The Parent as Companion and Guide. DWS colleague\, Laurie Clark\, and Nancy have written and published movement imaginations for Waldorf early childhood teachers\, Movement Journeys and Circle Adventures\, Vol. 1 and 2. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Jessie Cartwright\nJessie has been teaching at DWS since 2003.  She was the games teacher for two years before taking her first class as a lead teacher from 2nd Grade through 8th Grade. Jessie attended Fort Lewis College in Durango\, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities. She graduated from Antioch New England Graduate School\, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Waldorf Education in the summer of 2006. Rudolf Steiner\, the founder of Waldorf education\, described that each of us has twelve senses. There are the commonly recognized five senses that tell us about the world around us. Yet there are also other sensing avenues that tell us about ourselves within ourselves and our physical relation to the world. Still more inform us about and connect us to the outer social world with other human beings. Steiner went on to say that how these senses mature in childhood lays the foundation for future development in all realms for the rest of life. \nIt is exciting for Waldorf education that modern neurological research is confirming that this is true. Rudolf Steiner\, the founder of Waldorf education\, described that each of us has twelve senses. There are the commonly recognized five senses that tell us about the world around us. Yet there are also other sensing avenues that tell us about ourselves within ourselves and our physical relation to the world. Still more inform us about and connect us to the outer social world with other human beings. Steiner went on to say that how these senses mature in childhood lays the foundation for future development in all realms for the rest of life. \nIt is exciting for Waldorf education that modern neurological research is confirming that this is true. The sensory experiences we have from early childhood on literally build the brain. The way the body moves also forms the brain we will have for the whole of life. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Nancy Blanning\nNancy Blanning is an early childhood educator with a special interest in movement and has been working with young children in Waldorf settings for nearly 40 years. She has served as Denver Waldorf School faculty since 1987 as both lead kindergarten teacher and educational support staff. Nancy is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national and international Waldorf early childhood conferences. She is co-director of Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training at Sunbridge Institute in Spring Valley\, NY\, and is guest faculty at other teacher training programs. Nancy has also traveled widely as mentor and consultant to Waldorf schools in the US and Canada. She is editor of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association journal\, Gateways\, has edited several books\, and is author of Walking with Our Children: The Parent as Companion and Guide. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. She spent another 12 years educating four cohorts of Waldorf teachers\, and introducing numerous parents to Waldorf philosophy and education through the NOVA Institute. \nShe now works as a Waldorf educational consultant. She has taught BIPOC stories\, songs and movement from the Americas at several National conferences.  \nDWS Board Member Steven Hill\nSteven Hill is a parent to a biracial 8th grader at the Denver School of Arts. He currently serves on the Denver Waldorf School Board of Trustees and is a member of the school’s Diversity & Inclusivity Committee. Mr. Hill is a past member of the Denver Waldorf School Development Committee. He earned his Juris Doctor at the University of Colorado School of Law Boulder\, CO. He served serves on the Board of Directors\, Families Forward Resource Center Denver\, CO an organization that deals with social\, economical\, and racial disparities for families in Colorado. He has served as a Trainer for licensed Foster Care Parents and Kinship Parents in the state of Colorado teaching the topics of diversity and inclusivity\, culture\, discipline\, child abuse\, and child placement. \nLinda Hsieh\, LPC\, ACS\nLinda is a therapist and coach dedicated to the healing and thriving of QTBIPoC in Colorado and abroad. She is the daughter of immigrant parents from Taiwan\, born and raised in the Denver Metro area. She’s mother to Kai (3rd grade) and Meilin (1st grade)\, and partner to Vernon Dewey (8th grade teacher). \nD&I Committee Member Mahdyeh Nowkhandan\nMahdyeh is a new DWS parent\, and has recently become one of the leads on the new Denver Waldorf Racial Justice Parent Group. She has a background in advocacy work and racial justice\, as well as elementary education — including social-emotional and special education. She is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award\, and still she views herself as a life-long learner\, non-expert\, and an always growing member of the BIPOC community. \nD&I Committee Member JP Box\nJP is a parent to biracial DWS second grade twins. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a double-major in Spanish and Sociology\, culminating in a senior-year independent study on the intersection of basketball and race. While in law school\, JP helped lead an effort to revise The Georgetown Law Journal’s selection criteria to ensure a diverse and inclusive publication. Together with his partner\, Sarah\, he is the co-founder of Chasing Windmills\, a merino wool children’s apparel company. \nAbout The DWS Diversity and Inclusivity Committee\nWaldorf Education is founded in a worldview that acknowledges the spiritual nature of all beings. With deep intentionality\, Waldorf teachers are also mindful of how they move\, the postures they hold\, and even the ways in which they uphold their stamina to work with seemingly tireless children all day long. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Charlie Orphanides\nTruly a mover\, Charlie is an integral part of The Denver Waldorf school faculty\, and came to our school after teaching at Waldorf schools in Boulder\, New York City\, and New Hampshire. He has been teaching for a decade\, and began his career fortified with an English degree from Lewis and Clark College\, a master of education degree and Waldorf teacher certification from Antioch University—complemented with many trainings in movement\, art\, and meditation studies. Charlie is also a graduate of a 5-year training program in “Spacial” Dynamics\, certified in Bothmer Gymnastics (based on exercises from the first gym teacher at the first Waldorf school)\, and has been teaching circus for more than 7 years. \nAway from the classroom\, Charlie’s hobbies include gardening\, fixing and building things\, running\, bicycling\, playing with his two sons\, reading\, writing\, studying a variety of healing modalities\, and playing guitar and piano (along with anything else with which it’s fun to make music!). \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a monthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. As twelfth graders stand on the edge of adulthood\, they long for independence and yet are still unsure of their place in the world. The Senior Project is designed to help students begin to bridge this gap\, preparing them for college studies and professional work in the world. Students must design a project that forces them to pursue a new area of interest or something that will stretch their abilities\, mentally\, physically and/or emotionally. \nThe individual projects are approved by the High School faculty and supported by an adult mentor who is an expert in the chosen field of endeavor and preferably someone outside of the familiar school community. The project scope is equivalent to one main lesson block\, or about eighty hours of work\, and typically extends over many months of the school year. The project culminates in a formal presentation of learning to the community.

Theo is a sex educator and believes deeply in what they do. In recent years\, Theo has particularly focused their work on creating conversations that support youth when navigating their sexuality and media\, developing LGBTQIA+ inclusive sex education and human services practices\, advocating for young people to have autonomy over their bodies and pleasure\, and facilitating groups for people whose relationship to their sexuality has been harmed by conservative religious messages. They work for the Colorado Sexual Health Initiative at the Department of Human Services to provide sex education to young people involved in human services systems. In their off-time\, Theo crafts and enjoys the menagerie of pets and humans that fill their home with chaos. \nAbout Dylan Wilder Quinn\nDylan Wilder Quinn (they/he) believes closeness is necessary to dismantle oppression.
