SUMMARY:College Nights: Paying for College
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nPaying for College\nParents and students are invited to attend the fourth evening of our 6-part College Nights series with DWS College and Post-Secondary Guidance Counselor Laura Shope. \nTopic: Paying for College — Ideal for Grades 10\, 11\, and 12 \nDate: February 3\, 2022 \nTime: 6:30pm MT \nLocation: In person at DWS and online via Zoom \nPlease register once to reserve a seat for all remaining dates. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nIn this informational session\, we will cover the key concepts you need to understand regarding the financial side of paying for college. We will discuss what all the terms mean\, how to estimate what the true cost of a particular college or program will be\, the timing of the various steps\, and what you can do now to prepare. We will also touch on scholarships and alternative pathways to making it all work! \nKey takeaways include: \n\nUnderstand the terms you will encounter: cost of attendance\, estimated family contribution\, FAFSA\, etc.\nKnow how you can estimate what the colleges will expect you can pay\nIdentify next steps for your family to prepare\n\nAbout College Nights\nOur monthly College Nights series focuses on different aspects of the college and post-secondary application process. Laura Shope designed each evening to answer questions and support parents and students in the college application process.  These meetings are open to all\, although probably most useful to the grade listed with each topic. \n\nOctober 7th—Application Process 101 (Grades 10 and 11)\nNovember 4—SAT and ACT (Grades 10 and 11)\nDecember—No meeting\nJanuary 6—Supporting Your Student through the Process (Grades 10 and 11)\nFebruary 3—Paying for College (Grades 10 \, 11\, and 12)\nMarch 3—Making Choices (Grades 10 and 11)\nApril 21—College Engagement and Success (Grade 12)\nMay 4—Preparing to Apply & Making the Most of Summer (Grade 11)\n\nAbout Laura Shope\nLaura Shope came to DWS in 2021 via the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor\, where she served as the High School Student Support Coordinator and High School Administrator for the past three years\, and a parent in the Waldorf community for more than 17 years. She has extensive training in career development and personal coaching\, along with having recently completed her Waldorf High School Teacher Training through the Center for Anthroposophy. Her plans for working with our students and faculty include creating a rich program of self-reflection\, support\, and clarity around the decisions the students make for their plans after high school. \nLaura is a passionate artist and works with stone\, clay\, wood\, weaving\, and plaster to create abstract forms. She and her husband\, Dale Jensen\, are outdoor enthusiasts and look forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer. They have two sons\, Wilder and Corbin\, who attended Waldorf schools from preschool through grade 12 (Corbin will graduate from RSSAA in 2022).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_raw_js]JTNDJTIxLS0lNUJpZiUyMGx0ZSUyMElFJTIwOCU1RCUzRSUwQSUzQ3NjcmlwdCUyMGNoYXJzZXQlM0QlMjJ1dGYtOCUyMiUyMHR5cGUlM0QlMjJ0ZXh0JTJGamF2YXNjcmlwdCUyMiUyMHNyYyUzRCUyMiUyRiUyRmpzLmhzZm9ybXMubmV0JTJGZm9ybXMlMkZ2Mi1sZWdhY3kuanMlMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZzY3JpcHQlM0UlMEElM0MlMjElNUJlbmRpZiU1RC0tJTNFJTBBJTNDc2NyaXB0JTIwY2hhcnNldCUzRCUyMnV0Zi04JTIyJTIwdHlwZSUzRCUyMnRleHQlMkZqYXZhc2NyaXB0JTIyJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyJTJGJTJGanMuaHNmb3Jtcy5uZXQlMkZmb3JtcyUyRnYyLmpzJTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGc2NyaXB0JTNFJTBBJTNDc2NyaXB0JTNFJTBBJTIwJTIwaGJzcHQuZm9ybXMuY3JlYXRlJTI4JTdCJTBBJTA5cmVnaW9uJTNBJTIwJTIybmExJTIyJTJDJTBBJTA5cG9ydGFsSWQlM0ElMjAlMjI1NTI3MTY5JTIyJTJDJTBBJTA5Zm9ybUlkJTNBJTIwJTIyNTNhZWUyOTQtNzFlMS00ZjZkLWI2YmEtYTQ0MmI0MWJkN2Y2JTIyJTBBJTdEJTI5JTNCJTBBJTNDJTJGc2NyaXB0JTNF[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf High School\nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. Scroll down to hear from a few of our faculty members. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery el_id=”gallery-153447″ medias=”4695433\,4695439\,4695434\,4695438\,4695436\,4695440\,4695437\,4695526″ gutter_size=”1″ media_items=”media|lightbox|original\,icon|xl” screen_lg=”1000″ screen_md=”600″ screen_sm=”480″ single_width=”6″ single_overlay_opacity=”50″ single_h_align=”center” single_padding=”2″][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. As twelfth graders stand on the edge of adulthood\, they long for independence and yet are still unsure of their place in the world. The Senior Project is designed to help students begin to bridge this gap\, preparing them for college studies and professional work in the world. Students must design a project that forces them to pursue a new area of interest or something that will stretch their abilities\, mentally\, physically and/or emotionally. \nThe individual projects are approved by the High School faculty and supported by an adult mentor who is an expert in the chosen field of endeavor and preferably someone outside of the familiar school community. The project scope is equivalent to one main lesson block\, or about eighty hours of work\, and typically extends over many months of the school year. The project culminates in a formal presentation of learning to the community.

We will be discussing how to prepare your student for a successful transition from high school to the college environment. We will identify skills your student should have in place before school starts\, tools\, and resources to support their transition to campus/classes\, as well as how to take care of yourselves as parents in this significant time of life. \nKey takeaways include: \n\nPerspective of the changes students will encounter between high school and college\nTools and resources to support your student before\, during and after arriving on campus\nNext steps for your family to prepare\n\nAbout College Nights\nOur monthly College Nights series focuses on different aspects of the college and post-secondary application process. SUMMARY:College Nights: Preparing to Apply for College
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nPreparing to Apply for College & Making the Most of Summer\nParents and students are invited to attend the May session of our monthly College Nights series with DWS College and Post-Secondary Guidance Counselor Laura Shope. \nTopic: Preparing to Apply for College — Ideal for 11th Grade \nDate: May 4th\, 2022 \nTime: 6:30pm \nLocation: In person at DWS \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThis evening’s topic is specifically geared to our junior class families (all others are welcome to join to hear a preview!). We will be discussing and identifying the most helpful approaches to the summer before senior year for your students to be prepared as they enter the fall. Whether it is experiences\, skills\, learning or restoring\, how will you make the most of this summer? What is reasonable to take on specifically in regards to college applications? What does your student need most? \nKey takeaways include: \n\nPerspective and a clear approach to this upcoming summer for your rising senior\nA review of the college application parts and timing for the process\nSpecific next steps relevant to your family\n\nAbout College Nights\nOur monthly College Nights series focuses on different aspects of the college and post-secondary application process. Laura Shope designed each evening to answer questions and support parents and students in the college application process. These meetings are open to all\, although probably most useful to the grade listed with each topic. \n\nOctober 7th — Application Process 101 (Grades 10 and 11)\nNovember 4 — SAT and ACT (Grades 10 and 11)\nDecember — No meeting\nJanuary 6 — Supporting Your Student through the Process (Grades 10 and 11)\nFebruary 3 — Paying for College (Grades 10 \, 11\, and 12)\nMarch 3 — Making Choices (Grades 10 and 11)\nApril 21 — College Engagement and Success (Grade 12)\nMay 4 — Preparing to Apply & Making the Most of Summer (Grade 11)\n\nAbout Laura Shope\nLaura Shope came to DWS in 2021 via the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor\, where she served as the High School Student Support Coordinator and High School Administrator for the past three years\, and a parent in the Waldorf community for more than 17 years. SUMMARY:5th Grade Waldorf Pentathlon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nPentathlon is On!\nFor the first time ever\, The Denver Waldorf School will host numerous schools in the region for the 5th Grade Waldorf Pentathlon on May 13th\, including: \n\nBoulder Valley Waldorf School (Niwot\, Colorado)\nShining Mountain Waldorf School (Boulder\, Colorado)\nNorth Fork School of Integrated Studies (Paonia\, Colorado)\nWaldorf School on the Roaring Fork (Carbondale\, Colorado)\nSanta Fe Waldorf School (Santa Fe\, New Mexico)\nPrairie Moon Waldorf School (Lawrence\, Kansas)\n\nFamilies of participating students are welcome to join us for a day full of fun\, community\, nobility\, grace\, and honor. \nAbout the 5th Grade Waldorf Pentathlon\nEvery spring in a Waldorf school\, the 5th grade class studies Greek civilization\, learning about the government\, history\, mythology and culture. As a culmination of the students’ studies\, they participate in a Pentathlon\, which is an athletic event based on the ancient Greek games. As with all aspects of our Waldorf curriculum\, the event is designed to relate directly to the students’ learning and development\, bringing relevancy and enthusiasm for their studies. Grouped into five City States- Sparta\, Athens\, Corinth\, Ithaca\, and Thebes\, the students compete in the following events: \n\nLong run\nLong jump\nDiscus\nSprint\nJavelin\nWrestling\n\nThroughout their training and also on the day of the event\, students observe the nobility\, compassion\, and uprightness of each athlete. This also provides an alternate understanding of competition to what is often displayed in our modern popular culture.\nIn preparation for the festivities\, the students also write odes to their favorite Greek goddess or god and recite their compositions to those gathered as part of the opening ceremonies. The ritual opening\, with the lighting of the torch and the offering of poems\, very much sets a beautiful tone for the day. While the children put forth their best efforts in achieving results in speed and distance\, more important is their display of grace\, beauty\, and form.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Hosted by the Denver Waldorf Racial Justice Parent Group\, the Gear and Item Exchange is your opportunity to sort through your own spring and summer belongings — clothing\, gear\, household items\, toys; think camping items\, bikes\, balls\, hoops and cleats — to give\, sell or exchange with other families. \nDate: Sunday\, May 15\, 2022 \nTime: 2-5pm \nLocation: DWS \nBring a blanket or table to display your items. Popsicles will be served\, and cash donations for popsicles will go to your choice of either our school’s scholarship fund or solar campaign. \nWhy a Gear/Item Exchange?\nRacial justice is climate Justice\, and climate justice is racial justice. Climate change disproportionately impacts BIPOC communities around the world — communities that generally contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions and lack the resources that wealthy\, predominantly white communities have to adapt to climate change. And did you know that a majority of Goodwill donations end up in the landfill? \nPlus\, a gear and item exchange is a great way to actively involve your children in becoming part of the conversation that climate justice and racial justice are inextricably linked. \nAbout the Denver Waldorf Racial Justice Parent Group\nThe RJPG formed in the Fall of 2020 as a response to the growing desire within the DWS community to ensure that the relevant and needed topic of racial justice was talked about throughout the school year and remained a topic of discourse that lifted up all people—including and centering around BIPOC voices. \nWe are committed to exploring the issues of racial justice through fostering a safe\, open\, warm and non-judgmental container by which to deepen our awareness through studying\, growing and taking action together.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_custom_heading]Textile Waste in America[/vc_custom_heading][vc_single_image media=”4696454″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_custom_heading]Learn More[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]Have questions about the Gear and Item Exchange? SUMMARY:Parent Education: Nurturing a Growth Mindset in Children
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nHow to Shift from Fixed Mindset to Growth Mindset\nAre there areas in your child’s life where they are not motivated or inspired\, give up easily\, stay away from challenges\, want to be perfect\, and sometimes even lie about their performance? For some of our children\, it might be music; for others\, it might be academics or sports or having to talk to peers in school or on the playground. If so\, those are areas where a child has a fixed mindset. Join us for a presentation led by Denver Waldorf School Counselor Madhuri Deshmukh and Student Support Direct Andrea Weid on shifting from fixed mindset to growth mindset. \nDate: Friday\, September 23rd\, 2022 \nTime: 8:45-9:45am; Join us for Coffee in the Courtyard starting at 8am \nLocation: DWS Music Room \nPlease note childcare is not provided.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThis workshop focuses on understanding a growth mindset and how we can teach our kids to accept mistakes\, encounter challenges\, and problem-solve.  Specifically\, you’ll learn: \n\n\nThe five core needs of children and teens as they grow toward healthy sexual maturity\, and the five corresponding nurturing roles for families and school\n\n\n\nThe misplaced anxieties that keep adults from recognizing what is truly age-appropriate for kids to know\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to look behind children’s eyes\, see what they see\, and discover what they’re really wondering about\n\n\n\nHow to reduce discomfort and embarrassment—your own and your child’s\n\n\n\nResearch that demonstrates how vital early and ongoing conversations about sexuality are to health and well beings\n\n\n\n\n\nCreating authentic partnerships between families and schools around sexuality education\n\nWhat is Growth Mindset\nThe growth mindset is a theory invented by Stanford professor Carol Dweck\, Ph.D.\, in early 2000. It is a belief that we can learn and develop abilities. People with a growth mindset recognize the value of accepting challenges and learning from mistakes. They see that despite their natural ability\, they can improve their skills with effort and perseverance. On the contrary\, people with a fixed mindset believe that you are either born with talent/abilities or not\, and nothing can alter it; you cannot develop or enhance abilities. A child with a fixed mindset often thinks they cannot be successful because they are not good at something. For example; Fixed mindset: “I am not good at numbers\, so I will never learn my math facts!” vs. Growth mindset:  “If I practice every night for 20 minutes\, I will learn my multiplication facts!” \nFirstly\, we all need to celebrate mistakes. When children make mistakes\, it is essential to help them see it as an opportunity for Growth. Remember\, it is not uncommon for all of us to have a fixed mindset about some areas of our lives and a growth mindset about others. It does not only apply to academic success —we can have a growth mindset about relationships or even social problems. Furthermore\, we can all change our attitudes and grow our abilities and skills. \n\n\nAbout Madhuri Deshmukh\nMadhuri Deshmukh is a school counselor at Denver Waldorf School. She graduated from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania\, earning her Master’s in Counseling Psychology – School Counseling and Mental Health. During the last three years\, she worked as a school counselor in Douglas County School District. Before her previous job as a school counselor\, she served as a counseling intern for almost two years in an alternative\, Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) research school in Pennsylvania. She served students with emotional difficulties and special educational needs on Tier III level emotional and behavioral support. She also comes from the extensive experience of her work with children with trauma\, neglect\, and abuse. In addition to her work at The  Denver Waldorf School\, she is a clinical intern with a nonprofit organization that offers mental health services to underserved families and children. She grew up in India and is close to her family\, home\, and culture. Madhuri likes to volunteer for various causes\, hang out with friends\, shop\, travel\, and explore new places and cultures in her free time. She is passionate about mental health and is grateful to have the opportunity to work with children. Pennsylvania St.\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nMorning Schedule\nDuring your morning at The Denver Waldorf Middle School\, you will experience: \n\n6th Grade Main Lesson with Nelly Ivano\n7th Grade Physics with Tom Clark\n8th Grade Main Lesson with Ben Reynolds\n\nThen\, we will wrap up with a Q&A session with School Director Kelly Church\, Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm\, and Middle School Math Teacher Iliana Flefel.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf Middle School\n6th Grade: The spirit of conquest and the rule of law\nA time of collaboration\, self-direction\, grounding\, and emerging\, sixth grade marks the emergence of adolescence and the struggle between light and dark. Sixth graders take the first step toward critical thinking as they study Roman civilization and the Middle Ages\, as well as astronomy\, physics\, and mineralogy — subjects met with discernment and insight to encourage a healthy interest in\, and compassion for\, the world. \n7th Grade: Questing into the unknown\nLooking outward while feeling inward\, seventh graders are expressive and forceful\, challenging authority and exploring limits. They seek to assert independence and find their place\, while remembering to provide light for those behind them. During this time of discovery\, resistance\, optimism\, chaos\, and order\, we explore the Renaissance and examine truth and beauty via scientists\, religious reformers\, and artists. \n8th Grade: Extending one’s horizons\nBy eighth grade\, students have gained a well-rounded general picture of humanity and the universe. It is a  time of self-confidence\, interest in the world\, self-love\, and service to others. The elementary education has engaged their hearts\, wills\, and minds\, forming the basis for real learning throughout their lives. The final year of elementary school brings previous experiences to a new peak\, enabling students to enter fully and potently into their own time.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Hosted by the Denver Waldorf School Parent Council\, the Gear Swap is your opportunity to sort through your belongings — rain boots\, ski goggles\, bike helmets\, and even bathing suits — to give\, sell or exchange with other families. We will join together\, have fun\, and save our gear and outerwear of all sorts from ending up in the landfill. \nDate: Friday\, October 21\, 2022 \nTime: 3:45-4:45pm \nLocation: DWS Playground (weather permitting) \nBring a blanket or table to display your items. \n\nHow — The Gear Swap will be Organized by Grade\n\n\nThe Swap will be organized by grade. We are hoping this will help you locate an item by size (for example\, if you are looking for a size 6 ski jacket for your child\, you would go to the 1st Grade sign).\nPlease bring a blanket to display your goods. If you plan on displaying items in multiple grades\, please bring a blanket for each grade. You do not need to stay with your gear- feel free to socialize\, meander\, and shop!\nPLEASE NOTE: Anything not swapped (any leftover items) must be taken home. At the end of the Swap or when you are leaving\, please gather your blanket and any items that haven’t been chosen and take them home with you. We will follow up with suggestions for sustainable donation options.\nThere will be locations for unspecified/ adult sized items including toys\, games\, sporting goods\, camping gear\, and adult active wear and gear.\n\nWho — EVERYONE!\n\n\n\n\nJoin us! This will be a fun\, community building event to find needed\, useful items in a sustainable and cost effective way! You do not need to bring any gear to join in the swapping fun!\nPlease pick up your child from school as usual and then head over to the playground and field for the Swap. Children are welcome to play and shop with their parents. Please note: staff and administration may be present but parents will be responsible for supervising their children.\nPlease do not bring swapped gear on the playground to avoid losing or breaking things.\nWe ask that parents keep track of items children have swapped so things are not lost\, forgotten\, or abandoned.\n\nWhy a Gear Swap is Activism\nWhy is a gear swap activism? Because racial justice is climate justice and climate justice is racial justice. Climate change disproportionately impacts BIPOC communities around the world — communities that generally contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions and lack the resources that wealthy\, predominantly white communities have to adapt to climate change. And did you know that a majority of Goodwill donations end up in the landfill? Rather than buying things brand new\, extend the life of the earth’s resources by reusing and recycling items that other families are ready to pass on. This is a great way to actively involve your children in becoming part of the conversation that climate justice and racial justice are inextricably linked. Take action and join us on Friday 10/21! \n\nAbout The Denver Waldorf School Parent Council\nThe DWS Parent Council is a College-mandated committee which cultivates community and provides parents with access to the greater school community and governing bodies through the information and communication shared by Parent Council Representatives and the planning of class-specific and school-wide activities. Parent Council generates enthusiastic parent participation in the life of the school by creating opportunities for parents to enrich their own lives.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/3″][vc_custom_heading]Sign Up to Help Set Up[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]If you would like to be a part of of the Gear Swap by helping to set up\, help people find things\, or clean up at the end\, please sign up on the Sign Up Genius below.
