SUMMARY:DWS Financial Aid Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Waldorf School (DWS) is committed to economic diversity. The Board of Trustees\, College Leadership Council\, Faculty\, Administration\, and Parents work together to raise funds\, volunteer\, and make challenging budgetary decisions to keep tuition within the financial means of the largest possible group. We seek to establish healthy financial relationships for the school and the families within our community. \nAt DWS\, we recognize that many families want the inspired learning environment that an independent Waldorf education provides and that this type of education requires a significant financial commitment. Therefore\, DWS budgets a significant portion of income to our Tuition Adjustment Program\, but the budgeted funds are limited. All families who wish to provide Waldorf education for their child(ren) are encouraged to seek the means to make this education a viable option. \nJoin us for a LIVE presentation and Q&A on tuition adjustment & scholarship via zoom. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Night School: Drawing with Tom Clark
DESCRIPTION:In our Waldorf curriculum\, art is integrated into our learning every day – and one art form that you will find throughout all grades is drawing. At first glance\, some may view a completed drawing as the final product. However\, the lasting benefits of drawing far extend beyond the beauty that is created. It is the process of drawing itself that is the true gift\, not just the result. From visual motor integration\, spatial intelligence\, memory retention and recall\, creative cognition\, and more – drawing is a skill we can all benefit from. \nLong-time Waldorf educator Tom Clark will lead a two-part series for parents to learn how to draw and hear more about our visual arts curriculum at DWS. This will be a journey of drawing through the grades\, as you explore form drawing\, animal drawing\, and perspective drawing. Join in conversation\, community\, and art! \n\n\nDate: Wednesdays 2/28 and 3/6 \nTime: 3:45-5:15 pm MT \nLocation: High School Art Room \nPlease register by 2/21 to reserve a spot so we can ensure we have enough supplies

SUMMARY:Family Mindfulness Under the Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join Kara Wadenstierna\, therapist and long-time educator\, for an afternoon of family mindfulness under the trees in Platte Park. Moving through a series of individual\, small group\, and large group activities\, we will utilize drawing\, movement\, play\, and breath work to practice contacting the present moment with ease and joy. This 1-hour class is designed to provide joyful tools to families who long for a “Pause” button in large and small moments and are curious to integrate accessible mindful practices into daily life. See you under the trees! About Kara: After a decade in traditional and nature education\, Kara started working as a therapist in community mental health in 2018. Kara has found that integrating mindful practices into her clinical work her allow her to contact the present moment with ease and joy and extend this invitation to others. She is trained in evidenced-based practices including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)\, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) and is currently spending her time working with mothers at The Rylie Center for Hope and Healing. When not contemplating the color of a blade of grass or the smell of the breeze\, Kara can be found singing blissfully out of tune to her 7-month old daughter\, going on long walks with her family\, watching Pixar shorts\, or drinking green smoothies.

SUMMARY:Wonders of Waldorf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 50th anniversary celebration and showcase of our curriculum and community. It is not a coincidence that The Denver Waldorf School was founded on September 29th (we will celebrate a day early on the 28th!)\, which also marks the first major festival of the year\, Michaelmas. Michaelmas is a traditional Waldorf festival that reminds us to find our own strength and courage to overcome the darkness we face in our lives. It is a season that calls for us to acknowledge our worries yet move forward to affirm the goodness of life. And so\, with this spirit of Michaelmas\, we look forward to celebrating the beginnings of our school and community! \nOur “Wonders of Waldorf” event will include offerings from each of our grades to highlight the richness and beauty of Waldorf\, complimentary catered snacks (plus Kona Ice for purchase)\, children’s activities (including Waldorf window star making & tulip bulb planting)\, and much community merriment. Open and free to our school community and all those interested in learning more about our Waldorf education. \n*In case of inclement weather\, the Wonders of Waldorf celebration will be canceled.

SUMMARY:Adventures in Anthroposophic Education
DESCRIPTION:Executive functioning is a set of mental skills that include working memory\, flexible thinking\, and self-control. These skills are essential for academic success\, healthy relationships\, adapting to unexpected situations\, and managing life. They develop from early childhood into the mid-20s. One of the critical components to promote this development is providing a supportive environment that enables children to naturally learn these skills. In this presentation\, Laurie will demonstrate how the Waldorf Early Childhood program invites children to practice and form these abilities through enriching activities and a warm\, calming atmosphere. We will also explore how learning is most efficient when it coincides with neurological development. \nRSVPs are closed. \nOur valued community member\, Laurie Clark\, has been a Waldorf early educator since 1978. Laurie incorporates her therapeutic training into all aspects of the classroom and is in continual research through observation and constant engagement with the young child. The deep question of how to meet today’s children and explore their needs in practical applications lies at the heart of her work. Laurie mentors teachers is a frequent conference presenter\, and has co-authored two books with Nancy Blanning on therapeutic movement for young children.

SUMMARY:How Top Gun Shaped My Life: Media\, Morality and Imagination with Charlie Orphanides
DESCRIPTION:What did Rudolf Steiner mean when he spoke of Imagination (with an uppercase “I”)? Is there such a thing as morality without dogma and doctrine? How does media intersect and interact with our relationship to both Imagination and morality? And how did the 1986 Oscar winning film\, Top Gun\, influence the life of a Waldorf teacher? We will explore these questions in an interactive session\, in hopes of experiencing a few answers rather than simply listening to them and find Waldorf Education as offering a potential antidote to many of the challenges we see young people facing in today’s world.

SUMMARY:Alumni Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the music room or online Tuesday\, February 11 at 2:30-3:30PM for a conversation with a panel of wonderful DWS Alumni who will share about their journeys post high school. \nWatch on Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/94927461447?pwd=DqV7myLzys3aYnop6OgwROtjKUkQjF.1\nMeeting ID: 949 2746 1447\nPasscode: 617660 \nThe panel will feature DWS Alumni: \nMichael Coury-2007\, Jake Smith-2014\, Isabella Clark-2018\, Julia Etkin-2019 \nRead their Bio’s below  \nMichael Coury- 2007 \n I attended the Denver Waldorf School from kindergarten (Parzival Shield) to high school\, graduating high school in 2007 (almost 20 years ago\, wow!). Betsy Doyle White was my class teacher from 1st-8th grade\, and Annemarie Brown was our high school class advisor. After graduating\, I attended the University of Denver\, where I received a BA in International Studies and Russian. I stayed at DU a bit longer to earn my MA in International Studies.  \nAfter college\, I worked briefly as a criminal intelligence analyst for the Colorado Department of Safety. In 2020\, I moved to Maryland with my husband\, where I now work as the Director of Communications for Maryland’s Office of Overdose Response\, which is an office of the Maryland Department of Health. Our team works to promote collaboration between state and local agencies that implement programs related to substance use and overdose.  \nJulia Etkin- 2019 \nI attended the Denver Waldorf School from 1st grade\, in Betsy Doyle White’s class\, through 12th grade\, graduating from DWS High School in 2019. I attended Union College in upstate NY and graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelor’s degree in Science\, Medicine\, and Technology with Political Science and Law in 2023. I then completed my Postgraduate Fellowship at Yale School of Medicine. I am a Dean’s Scholar at Harvard Medical School\, pursuing my Master of Science in Bioethics (MBE)\, and hold a research position at the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard.  \n“Attending the Denver Waldorf School from 1st through 12th grade cultivated my ability to think critically\, approach challenges with creativity\, and engage deeply with the interconnectedness of disciplines\, namely science and government. This foundation continues to shape how I approach my studies and research today\, as I explore the ethical and regulatory implications of drug development and healthcare delivery and policy at Harvard Medical School.” \nJake Smith- 2014 \nI graduated from the Denver Waldorf School in 2014 after attending K-12. Following graduation\, I attended Colorado State University\, where I earned a degree in Health and Exercise Science\, graduating in 2018. Following my studies\, I moved to Seattle to work as a personal trainer. While I enjoyed the role\, I found myself seeking greater challenges and opportunities for growth. To transition into a more dynamic industry\, I pursued a Master of Business Administration at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business\, while working full-time. I graduated in 2024. During this period\, I began contracting at Microsoft as a Project Manager for the Go-to-Market and Strategic Planning team. After 1.5 years in that role\, I was offered a full-time position as a Cybersecurity Sales Specialist at Microsoft\, where I have now been for over a year. \n“My time at Waldorf instilled valuable lessons that extend beyond academics—it taught me how to learn\, adapt\, and approach new challenges with curiosity and excitement.” \nIsabella Clark- 2018 \nI began at the DWS at age 4 in Woodrose Kindergarten. Mrs. Vermouth was my teacher from grades 1-8 and I graduated from the high school in 2018. After graduation\, I received an art scholarship to Southwestern University\, and spent two semesters there before opting out to run my own art business. I spent two years discovering what kind of artist I wanted to be\, starting out by painting pet portraits for friends. This was followed by many interesting projects from crosswalk murals\, to bodypainting retreats\, to logo design\, all which landed me where I am today. I have settled into being a children’s book illustrator where I get to spend my time with the medium I love: watercolor. I am currently working with three authors\, one of which I have partnered with long term\, for 13 series and 39 books of mindfulness tools for children! The first book in the first series\, called Courage finds his Calm\, is being published this coming August by Morgan James Publishing!  \n“Through teaching me to think critically\, Waldorf fostered problem-solving skills and a self-reliance within me that has made me resilient to life’s challenges and given me the strength to face anything life has thrown at me. However\, I think the very best thing Waldorf gave to me was a loving and supportive community throughout my childhood that nurtured me into becoming a healthy adult.” \nYou can find us at Awakentheone.org. \nYou can find me on instagram at @izzyssketchbook and my website at isabellaclark.com
