Please attend our financial aid workshop with Business Director Laurie Thompson and Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm to learn how to apply for the 2023–2024 school year. \nDate: Saturday\, January 14th \nTime: 10-11am MT \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nThis workshop is open to currently enrolled and prospective families. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring the workshop\, Laurie and Karlena will cover: \n\nTuition adjustment (TA) process (applications\, review\, and deadlines)\nScholarships\n\nThe Denver Waldorf School is committed to economic diversity. The Board of Trustees\, College Leadership Council\, Faculty\, Administration and parents work together to raise funds\, volunteer\, and make challenging budgetary decisions to keep tuition within the financial means of the largest possible group. We seek to establish financial relationships that are healthy for the school and the families within our community. \nAbout Tuition Adjustment\nAt DWS\, we recognize that many families want the inspired learning environment that an independent Waldorf education provides\, and that this type of education requires a significant financial commitment. Therefore\, DWS budgets a significant portion of income to our Tuition Adjustment Program\, but the budgeted funds are limited. All families who wish to provide Waldorf education for their child(ren) are encouraged to seek the means to make this education a viable option. \nDWS expects families to exercise their best creative efforts to use their own financial resources before turning to the Tuition Adjustment Program. It is not uncommon for a DWS family to pay 15 to 20% or more of their income for tuition. This percentage applies to both full and reduced tuition families. Tuition Adjustment is not based on willingness to pay\, but on one’s ability to pay. Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. We are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? Journey into our school for a morning where you’ll experience a taste of our curriculum\, and begin understanding how it integrates academics\, arts\, and athletics in educating the whole student. \nDate: February 8\, 2023 \nTime: 9:30-11am \nLocation: 2100 S. Pennsylvania St.\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nMorning Schedule\nDuring your morning at The Denver Waldorf Middle School\, you will experience: \n\n6th Grade Main Lesson with Nelly Ivano\n7th Grade Physics with Tom Clark\n8th Grade Main Lesson with Ben Reynolds\n\nThen\, we will wrap up with a Q&A session with long-time Waldorf educator Betsy Doyle White\, Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm\, and Middle School Math Teacher Iliana Flefel.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf Middle School\n6th Grade: The spirit of conquest and the rule of law\nA time of collaboration\, self-direction\, grounding\, and emerging\, sixth grade marks the emergence of adolescence and the struggle between light and dark. Sixth graders take the first step toward critical thinking as they study Roman civilization and the Middle Ages\, as well as astronomy\, physics\, and mineralogy — subjects met with discernment and insight to encourage a healthy interest in\, and compassion for\, the world. \n7th Grade: Questing into the unknown\nLooking outward while feeling inward\, seventh graders are expressive and forceful\, challenging authority and exploring limits. They seek to assert independence and find their place\, while remembering to provide light for those behind them. During this time of discovery\, resistance\, optimism\, chaos\, and order\, we explore the Renaissance and examine truth and beauty via scientists\, religious reformers\, and artists. \n8th Grade: Extending one’s horizons\nBy eighth grade\, students have gained a well-rounded general picture of humanity and the universe. It is a  time of self-confidence\, interest in the world\, self-love\, and service to others. The elementary education has engaged their hearts\, wills\, and minds\, forming the basis for real learning throughout their lives. The final year of elementary school brings previous experiences to a new peak\, enabling students to enter fully and potently into their own time.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. SUMMARY:Canceled: Relearning Conversation
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled! \nCovid and the polarization that came in its wake laid bare our current cultural inability to engage in honest conversations about difficult topics. We have largely learned to accept government and the courts (and hence a top-down ordering) as our conflict resolution method. \nThis is an immeasurable loss for all of us. New knowledge and wisdom don’t grow by fiat. An open conversation allows new insights and surprising possibilities to emerge seemingly out of nowhere.\nIn this presentation\, Elan Leibner will present a framework for re-learning the art of conversation. A Waldorf teacher of many years called this presentation \,”The most inspiring talk about social interactions I’ve heard in years.” \nElan Leibner has been a Waldorf educator for over 30 years and is the chair of the Pedagogical Section Council of North America. He left his house of many years and has been living with his wife and two dogs in an RV full time since 2021\, traveling in search of natural beauty and in support of Waldorf education across the continent. https://elanleibner.com/

SUMMARY:Night School: A Lesson in Humanities with High School Teacher Eric Mills
DESCRIPTION:Why do we visit the museum to look at paintings? What do we see\, and why these colors? How do we attach a narrative to it? How will the power to observe translate to other classes and to life beyond school? Come join us for an evening of night school\, led by high school humanities teacher Eric Mills\, and explore humanity’s visual intelligence. Any adults in the community are welcome and encouraged to join – it’s not necessary to have a high school student. Mr. Mills will provide a glimpse into the high school classroom and what it offers our students. He will also give plenty of time for Q&A about our humanities curriculum\, so bring your questions!

The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. SUMMARY:DWS Financial Aid Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Waldorf School (DWS) is committed to economic diversity. The Board of Trustees\, College Leadership Council\, Faculty\, Administration\, and Parents work together to raise funds\, volunteer\, and make challenging budgetary decisions to keep tuition within the financial means of the largest possible group. We seek to establish healthy financial relationships for the school and the families within our community. \nAt DWS\, we recognize that many families want the inspired learning environment that an independent Waldorf education provides and that this type of education requires a significant financial commitment. Therefore\, DWS budgets a significant portion of income to our Tuition Adjustment Program\, but the budgeted funds are limited. All families who wish to provide Waldorf education for their child(ren) are encouraged to seek the means to make this education a viable option. \nJoin us for a LIVE presentation and Q&A on tuition adjustment & scholarship via zoom. \n  \n

This group is dedicated to being a safe space for all – where non-expert learners can share\, question\, discover\, grow\, and work alongside one another to create a more inclusive\, fair\, equitable\, honest\, peaceful and unified future. \nOur Meetings\nWe meet every other Wednesday from 8:30 – 9:30am. \nUpcoming Dates: 1/10\, 1/24\, 2/7\, 2/28\, 3/13\, 3/27\, 4/10\, 4/24\, 5/8 \nTime: 8:30-9:30am \nLocation: DWS Parent Council Room \n\n\nWe recently ready “Normal Sucks” by Jonathan Mooney. We are currently reading “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates\, and then we will move on to “Real Queer America” by Samantha Allen. \n\n\nAbout The Denver Waldorf Parent Belonging Group\nThe Denver Waldorf Parent Belonging Group was first formed as the Racial Justice Parent Group in the fall of 2020 as a response to the growing desire within the DWS community to ensure that the relevant and needed topic of racial justice was talked about throughout the school year and remained a topic of discourse that lifted up all people—including and centering around BIPOC voices. We will continue to read books about race and indentity\, and now have also broadened our topics to other important matters such as gender\, neurodiversity\, and more. \nWe are committed to exploring these issues through fostering a safe\, open\, warm and non-judgmental container by which to deepen our awareness through studying and growing together.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_custom_heading]Join Us[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”236094″]Interesting in joining us? SUMMARY:Night School: Drawing with Tom Clark
DESCRIPTION:In our Waldorf curriculum\, art is integrated into our learning every day – and one art form that you will find throughout all grades is drawing. At first glance\, some may view a completed drawing as the final product. However\, the lasting benefits of drawing far extend beyond the beauty that is created. It is the process of drawing itself that is the true gift\, not just the result. From visual motor integration\, spatial intelligence\, memory retention and recall\, creative cognition\, and more – drawing is a skill we can all benefit from. \nLong-time Waldorf educator Tom Clark will lead a two-part series for parents to learn how to draw and hear more about our visual arts curriculum at DWS. This will be a journey of drawing through the grades\, as you explore form drawing\, animal drawing\, and perspective drawing. Join in conversation\, community\, and art! \n\n\nDate: Wednesdays 2/28 and 3/6 \nTime: 3:45-5:15 pm MT \nLocation: High School Art Room \nPlease register by 2/21 to reserve a spot so we can ensure we have enough supplies

SUMMARY:Family Mindfulness Under the Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join Kara Wadenstierna\, therapist and long-time educator\, for an afternoon of family mindfulness under the trees in Platte Park. Moving through a series of individual\, small group\, and large group activities\, we will utilize drawing\, movement\, play\, and breath work to practice contacting the present moment with ease and joy. This 1-hour class is designed to provide joyful tools to families who long for a “Pause” button in large and small moments and are curious to integrate accessible mindful practices into daily life. See you under the trees! About Kara: After a decade in traditional and nature education\, Kara started working as a therapist in community mental health in 2018. Kara has found that integrating mindful practices into her clinical work her allow her to contact the present moment with ease and joy and extend this invitation to others. She is trained in evidenced-based practices including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)\, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) and is currently spending her time working with mothers at The Rylie Center for Hope and Healing. When not contemplating the color of a blade of grass or the smell of the breeze\, Kara can be found singing blissfully out of tune to her 7-month old daughter\, going on long walks with her family\, watching Pixar shorts\, or drinking green smoothies.

SUMMARY:Wonders of Waldorf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 50th anniversary celebration and showcase of our curriculum and community. It is not a coincidence that The Denver Waldorf School was founded on September 29th (we will celebrate a day early on the 28th!)\, which also marks the first major festival of the year\, Michaelmas. Michaelmas is a traditional Waldorf festival that reminds us to find our own strength and courage to overcome the darkness we face in our lives. It is a season that calls for us to acknowledge our worries yet move forward to affirm the goodness of life. And so\, with this spirit of Michaelmas\, we look forward to celebrating the beginnings of our school and community! \nOur “Wonders of Waldorf” event will include offerings from each of our grades to highlight the richness and beauty of Waldorf\, complimentary catered snacks (plus Kona Ice for purchase)\, children’s activities (including Waldorf window star making & tulip bulb planting)\, and much community merriment. Open and free to our school community and all those interested in learning more about our Waldorf education. \n*In case of inclement weather\, the Wonders of Waldorf celebration will be canceled.
