SUMMARY:Parent Education: Nurturing a Growth Mindset in Children
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nHow to Shift from Fixed Mindset to Growth Mindset\nAre there areas in your child’s life where they are not motivated or inspired\, give up easily\, stay away from challenges\, want to be perfect\, and sometimes even lie about their performance? For some of our children\, it might be music; for others\, it might be academics or sports or having to talk to peers in school or on the playground. If so\, those are areas where a child has a fixed mindset. Join us for a presentation led by Denver Waldorf School Counselor Madhuri Deshmukh and Student Support Direct Andrea Weid on shifting from fixed mindset to growth mindset. \nDate: Friday\, September 23rd\, 2022 \nTime: 8:45-9:45am; Join us for Coffee in the Courtyard starting at 8am \nLocation: DWS Music Room \nPlease note childcare is not provided.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThis workshop focuses on understanding a growth mindset and how we can teach our kids to accept mistakes\, encounter challenges\, and problem-solve.  Specifically\, you’ll learn: \n\n\nThe five core needs of children and teens as they grow toward healthy sexual maturity\, and the five corresponding nurturing roles for families and school\n\n\n\nThe misplaced anxieties that keep adults from recognizing what is truly age-appropriate for kids to know\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to look behind children’s eyes\, see what they see\, and discover what they’re really wondering about\n\n\n\nHow to reduce discomfort and embarrassment—your own and your child’s\n\n\n\nResearch that demonstrates how vital early and ongoing conversations about sexuality are to health and well beings\n\n\n\n\n\nCreating authentic partnerships between families and schools around sexuality education\n\nWhat is Growth Mindset\nThe growth mindset is a theory invented by Stanford professor Carol Dweck\, Ph.D.\, in early 2000. It is a belief that we can learn and develop abilities. People with a growth mindset recognize the value of accepting challenges and learning from mistakes. They see that despite their natural ability\, they can improve their skills with effort and perseverance. On the contrary\, people with a fixed mindset believe that you are either born with talent/abilities or not\, and nothing can alter it; you cannot develop or enhance abilities. A child with a fixed mindset often thinks they cannot be successful because they are not good at something. For example; Fixed mindset: “I am not good at numbers\, so I will never learn my math facts!” vs. Growth mindset:  “If I practice every night for 20 minutes\, I will learn my multiplication facts!” \nFirstly\, we all need to celebrate mistakes. When children make mistakes\, it is essential to help them see it as an opportunity for Growth. Remember\, it is not uncommon for all of us to have a fixed mindset about some areas of our lives and a growth mindset about others. It does not only apply to academic success —we can have a growth mindset about relationships or even social problems. Furthermore\, we can all change our attitudes and grow our abilities and skills. \n\n\nAbout Madhuri Deshmukh\nMadhuri Deshmukh is a school counselor at Denver Waldorf School. She graduated from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania\, earning her Master’s in Counseling Psychology – School Counseling and Mental Health. During the last three years\, she worked as a school counselor in Douglas County School District. Before her previous job as a school counselor\, she served as a counseling intern for almost two years in an alternative\, Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) research school in Pennsylvania. She served students with emotional difficulties and special educational needs on Tier III level emotional and behavioral support. She also comes from the extensive experience of her work with children with trauma\, neglect\, and abuse. In addition to her work at The  Denver Waldorf School\, she is a clinical intern with a nonprofit organization that offers mental health services to underserved families and children. She grew up in India and is close to her family\, home\, and culture. Madhuri likes to volunteer for various causes\, hang out with friends\, shop\, travel\, and explore new places and cultures in her free time. She is passionate about mental health and is grateful to have the opportunity to work with children. Journey into our school for a morning where you’ll experience a taste of our curriculum\, and begin understanding how it integrates academics\, arts\, and athletics in educating the whole student. \nDate: October 10\, 2022 \nTime: 9:30-11am MT \nLocation: 2100 S. Pennsylvania St.\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nMorning Schedule\nDuring your morning at The Denver Waldorf Middle School\, you will experience: \n\n6th Grade Main Lesson with Nelly Ivano\n7th Grade Physics with Tom Clark\n8th Grade Main Lesson with Ben Reynolds\n\nThen\, we will wrap up with a Q&A session with School Director Kelly Church\, Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm\, and Middle School Math Teacher Iliana Flefel.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf Middle School\n6th Grade: The spirit of conquest and the rule of law\nA time of collaboration\, self-direction\, grounding\, and emerging\, sixth grade marks the emergence of adolescence and the struggle between light and dark. Sixth graders take the first step toward critical thinking as they study Roman civilization and the Middle Ages\, as well as astronomy\, physics\, and mineralogy — subjects met with discernment and insight to encourage a healthy interest in\, and compassion for\, the world. \n7th Grade: Questing into the unknown\nLooking outward while feeling inward\, seventh graders are expressive and forceful\, challenging authority and exploring limits. They seek to assert independence and find their place\, while remembering to provide light for those behind them. During this time of discovery\, resistance\, optimism\, chaos\, and order\, we explore the Renaissance and examine truth and beauty via scientists\, religious reformers\, and artists. \n8th Grade: Extending one’s horizons\nBy eighth grade\, students have gained a well-rounded general picture of humanity and the universe. It is a  time of self-confidence\, interest in the world\, self-love\, and service to others. The elementary education has engaged their hearts\, wills\, and minds\, forming the basis for real learning throughout their lives. The final year of elementary school brings previous experiences to a new peak\, enabling students to enter fully and potently into their own time.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Led by ECE Lead Teacher Krisztina van’t Veer\, this experiential morning is open to prospective families who’d like a hands-on experience of our early childhood program. \nDate: October 13\, 2022 \nTime: 9-10am \nLocation: 2100 S. Pennsylvania St.\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nMorning Schedule\nThe warm and simple rhythm of this experiential morning in our kindergarten guides children and their families through activities such as: \n\nBread baking\nStorytelling through puppetry\nJoyful play\n\nPlease note\, this event is a hands-on experience and not a tour. Therefore\, please contact Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm if you’d like to learn more on our ECE program and the admissions process.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThe Waldorf Approach to Education\nIn our classrooms\, children gradually become accustomed to working within a group\, listening to stories\, interacting with a teacher and following a daily routine\, while at the same time being supported in his or her development as an individual through the encouragement of creative play\, practical life skills\, and artistic opportunities. \nEach teacher deeply understands the young child and the need for movement\, as well as the child’s devotion to learning about the world through imitating everything he or she experiences. We follow seasonal rhythms and in parallel\, honor your child’s gradual transition from home to school and childhood to adulthood.[/vc_column_text][vc_button border_width=”0″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdenverwaldorf.org%2Fearly-childhood%2F|title:ECE”]Learn More About Our Waldorf ECE Program[/vc_button][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Hosted by the Denver Waldorf School Parent Council\, the Gear Swap is your opportunity to sort through your belongings — rain boots\, ski goggles\, bike helmets\, and even bathing suits — to give\, sell or exchange with other families. We will join together\, have fun\, and save our gear and outerwear of all sorts from ending up in the landfill. \nDate: Friday\, October 21\, 2022 \nTime: 3:45-4:45pm \nLocation: DWS Playground (weather permitting) \nBring a blanket or table to display your items. \n\nHow — The Gear Swap will be Organized by Grade\n\n\nThe Swap will be organized by grade. We are hoping this will help you locate an item by size (for example\, if you are looking for a size 6 ski jacket for your child\, you would go to the 1st Grade sign).\nPlease bring a blanket to display your goods. If you plan on displaying items in multiple grades\, please bring a blanket for each grade. You do not need to stay with your gear- feel free to socialize\, meander\, and shop!\nPLEASE NOTE: Anything not swapped (any leftover items) must be taken home. At the end of the Swap or when you are leaving\, please gather your blanket and any items that haven’t been chosen and take them home with you. We will follow up with suggestions for sustainable donation options.\nThere will be locations for unspecified/ adult sized items including toys\, games\, sporting goods\, camping gear\, and adult active wear and gear.\n\nWho — EVERYONE!\n\n\n\n\nJoin us! This will be a fun\, community building event to find needed\, useful items in a sustainable and cost effective way! You do not need to bring any gear to join in the swapping fun!\nPlease pick up your child from school as usual and then head over to the playground and field for the Swap. Children are welcome to play and shop with their parents. Please note: staff and administration may be present but parents will be responsible for supervising their children.\nPlease do not bring swapped gear on the playground to avoid losing or breaking things.\nWe ask that parents keep track of items children have swapped so things are not lost\, forgotten\, or abandoned.\n\nWhy a Gear Swap is Activism\nWhy is a gear swap activism? Because racial justice is climate justice and climate justice is racial justice. Climate change disproportionately impacts BIPOC communities around the world — communities that generally contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions and lack the resources that wealthy\, predominantly white communities have to adapt to climate change. And did you know that a majority of Goodwill donations end up in the landfill? Rather than buying things brand new\, extend the life of the earth’s resources by reusing and recycling items that other families are ready to pass on. This is a great way to actively involve your children in becoming part of the conversation that climate justice and racial justice are inextricably linked. Take action and join us on Friday 10/21! \n\nAbout The Denver Waldorf School Parent Council\nThe DWS Parent Council is a College-mandated committee which cultivates community and provides parents with access to the greater school community and governing bodies through the information and communication shared by Parent Council Representatives and the planning of class-specific and school-wide activities. Parent Council generates enthusiastic parent participation in the life of the school by creating opportunities for parents to enrich their own lives.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/3″][vc_custom_heading]Sign Up to Help Set Up[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]If you would like to be a part of of the Gear Swap by helping to set up\, help people find things\, or clean up at the end\, please sign up on the Sign Up Genius below. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”188728″]Learn more about elementary school academics\, assessments\, and how Waldorf education prepares children for the future. Ideal for parents of preschool and kindergarten students\, this Q&A will be led by long-time Waldorf educator and student evaluation specialist Faustina Pfister.  \nDate: Tuesday\, November 29th\, 2022 \nTime: 4-5pm \nLocation: DWS First Grade Classroom (2100 S Pennsylvania\, Denver\, CO 80210) \nPlease register to reserve a seat. \nChildcare will be provided through our aftercare program. Please sign up through BigSIS if you have a currently enrolled student or email Ben Katz at benkatz@denverwaldorf.org if you have a prospective student. All students must be at least 3.5 years old and toileting independently. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nOur faculty will answer common questions about: \n\nThe transition from kindergarten to 1st grade and the first grade readiness process and evaluation\nSpecific pedagogical elements of the first grade\, presented by Magally Luna (current first grade teacher)\nWhy a strong foundation positively sets up children to excel in the lower grades (1-4) curriculum\, presented by Jessie Cartwright (current third grade teacher) \n\nSpecifically\, our faculty will cover why we do a readiness screening (versus solely going by birth date as in public school)\, and how to look at physical development\, but also neurological development as shown through body movement and integration\, spatial perception and orientation in space\, and memory. Additionally\, in Waldorf we strive to develop a holistic picture of each child in these realms plus speech and listening capacities and social/emotional maturity as well.  Therefore\, we’ll describe the “Why?” of readiness screenings and provide some examples of the “What?” each child experiences during the screening\, \nAbout Our First Grade Program\nFirst grade is a child’s introduction to the collective being of a class. We nurture a deep reverence for the earth\, compassion for classmates\, and a healthy respect for every living thing.  \nFrom knitting to numbers\, fairy tales to falling leaves\, we help first graders discover the wonders of our world and understand the rhythm of life. This year is the beginning of a multi-year relationship with their teacher. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Faustina Pfister\nFaustina Pfister has been a teacher at The Denver Waldorf school for over 20 years. She started as a teacher in the kindergarten\, then became a grades teacher 1-8. She is a certified in a variety of therapeutic modalities including Brain Gym\, Handle\, BRMT reflex integration\, and executive function.  When she left teaching\, she went on to complete a certification in the Extra Lesson\, an anthroposophical approach to curative education based on Audrey McAllen’s work. Supporting students who are non-traditional learners has been the main focus of my teaching. Currently\, she works with students one-on-one and conduct screenings. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. SUMMARY:Parent Education: Managing Children's Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”161313″] \nHow to Help Children with Anxiety and Stress\nWorry and anxiety are normal emotions that we and our children experience on many occasions throughout life. Sometimes they are accompanied by other emotions such as nervousness\, fear\, panic\, and even anger. Want to learn more on how to help children manage this flurry? Join us for a presentation led by Denver Waldorf School Counselor Madhuri Deshmukh and Student Support Direct Andrea Weid on the body responses to anxiety\, stress\, and worry\, with tips and tools for managing these. \nDate: Tuesday\, December 6th\, 2022 \nTime: 8:45-10am; Join us for Coffee in the Courtyard starting at 8:15am \nLocation: DWS Music Room \nPlease note childcare is not provided.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”313350″] \nA Note from Madhuri on Body Responses\nWhen we experience anxiety\, our bodies go into fight\, flight\, freeze\, or fawn mode; this is our body’s natural way of reacting to a perceived threat. The bodily symptoms of anxiety\, such as increased heart rate\, sweating\, shakiness\, headaches\, butterflies in our stomach\, etc.\, urge us to decide fast whether to fight\, flee or freeze from a threatening situation. Life is often fast-paced and requires a lot of our time and energy\, and our children are not an exception to that. We all have varied definitions of what situations are threatening to us\, and our perception is shaped by our experiences; what you might find threatening\, another person may find easy to deal with. Just being aware of when our body is going into a fight\, flight or freeze or fawn mode can be a considerable tool for enabling us to overcome our worry and anxiety. \nAbout Madhuri Deshmukh\nMadhuri Deshmukh is a school counselor at Denver Waldorf School. Please attend our financial aid workshop with Business Director Laurie Thompson and Admissions Director Karlena Alonso Lamm to learn how to apply for the 2023–2024 school year. \nDate: Saturday\, January 14th \nTime: 10-11am MT \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nThis workshop is open to currently enrolled and prospective families. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring the workshop\, Laurie and Karlena will cover: \n\nTuition adjustment (TA) process (applications\, review\, and deadlines)\nScholarships\n\nThe Denver Waldorf School is committed to economic diversity. The Board of Trustees\, College Leadership Council\, Faculty\, Administration and parents work together to raise funds\, volunteer\, and make challenging budgetary decisions to keep tuition within the financial means of the largest possible group. We seek to establish financial relationships that are healthy for the school and the families within our community. \nAbout Tuition Adjustment\nAt DWS\, we recognize that many families want the inspired learning environment that an independent Waldorf education provides\, and that this type of education requires a significant financial commitment. Therefore\, DWS budgets a significant portion of income to our Tuition Adjustment Program\, but the budgeted funds are limited. All families who wish to provide Waldorf education for their child(ren) are encouraged to seek the means to make this education a viable option. \nDWS expects families to exercise their best creative efforts to use their own financial resources before turning to the Tuition Adjustment Program. It is not uncommon for a DWS family to pay 15 to 20% or more of their income for tuition. This percentage applies to both full and reduced tuition families. Tuition Adjustment is not based on willingness to pay\, but on one’s ability to pay. Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Why do adults have book clubs and not math clubs? Are you interested in learning about our high school humanities trajectory as well as how our curriculum intentionally builds upon itself from the early grades? Come join us for an evening of Night School led by high school humanities teacher Eric Mills. Any adults in the community are welcome and encouraged to join – it’s not necessary to have a high school student! Eric will give a peek into what a literature class at DWS looks like and what it offers our students\, as well as discuss some of the whys or why nots of AP English. He will also give plenty of time for Q&A about our humanities curriculum\, so bring your questions! \nDate: Thursday\, April 27\, 2023 \nTime: 4-5:30 pm MT \nLocation: Eric’s Classroom \nRegister to reserve a spot. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”153995″] \nAbout Eric Mills\nAs the high school Humanities teacher\, Eric Mills teaches students to be clear thinkers. In his classes\, which focus on history\, storytelling\, race\, and gender\, students learn to view the world with a more critical eye. \nBefore coming to The Denver Waldorf School in 2018\, Eric taught in Denver Public Schools for 7 years as an English teacher. During his time at DPS\, Eric served as chair of the English department\, teacher leader for student council\, and director of the Denver Public Schools district-wide poetry slam. He was nominated for the Mayor’s Award for Arts and Excellence in Culture in 2015. \nEric holds BAs in Philosophy and English\, an MA in 20th-Century American Literature and Literary Theory\, and is working toward a Ph.D. in Literary Studies at the University of Denver\, where he is researching the decline of the Great House in the Victorian novel as it crossed the Atlantic. \nOutside of the classroom Eric has been a passionate advocate for youth representation in the arts and quality education in all schools. He was a classically-trained pianist\, and he currently enjoys strumming chords on the guitar with his children when he’s not repairing parts of his 128-year-old Denver home. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”474121″] \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. SUMMARY:Canceled: Relearning Conversation
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled! \nCovid and the polarization that came in its wake laid bare our current cultural inability to engage in honest conversations about difficult topics. We have largely learned to accept government and the courts (and hence a top-down ordering) as our conflict resolution method. \nThis is an immeasurable loss for all of us. New knowledge and wisdom don’t grow by fiat. An open conversation allows new insights and surprising possibilities to emerge seemingly out of nowhere.\nIn this presentation\, Elan Leibner will present a framework for re-learning the art of conversation. A Waldorf teacher of many years called this presentation \,”The most inspiring talk about social interactions I’ve heard in years.” \nElan Leibner has been a Waldorf educator for over 30 years and is the chair of the Pedagogical Section Council of North America. He left his house of many years and has been living with his wife and two dogs in an RV full time since 2021\, traveling in search of natural beauty and in support of Waldorf education across the continent. https://elanleibner.com/

SUMMARY:Night School: A Lesson in Humanities with High School Teacher Eric Mills
DESCRIPTION:Why do we visit the museum to look at paintings? What do we see\, and why these colors? How do we attach a narrative to it? How will the power to observe translate to other classes and to life beyond school? Come join us for an evening of night school\, led by high school humanities teacher Eric Mills\, and explore humanity’s visual intelligence. Any adults in the community are welcome and encouraged to join – it’s not necessary to have a high school student. Mr. Mills will provide a glimpse into the high school classroom and what it offers our students. He will also give plenty of time for Q&A about our humanities curriculum\, so bring your questions!
