SUMMARY:The Bridge: Movement and the Waldorf Experience
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nUp Next on The Bridge: Why we move\nWondering why movement is paramount in the Waldorf curriculum? This month on The Bridge\, Waldorf educator Charlie Orphanides takes us on a brief journey through the field of movement\, where we will move a bit ourselves and discuss the increasing relevance and indeed necessity of movement in our schools and in the lives of children in general. \nDate: March 24\, 2021 \nTime: 7pm MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring the presentation\, Charlie will cover why and how we move in our Waldorf schools—specifically\, speaking to the influence and impacts of the whole human being\, from the base physiology to subtle neural activity and even into the realm of the spiritual or finer aspects of the human experience. \nFrom Gym and Games classes to the art of Eurythmy\, from handwork and woodwork to circle time and jump roping multiplication tables\, Waldorf education moves each student in diverse ways. With deep intentionality\, Waldorf teachers are also mindful of how they move\, the postures they hold\, and even the ways in which they uphold their stamina to work with seemingly tireless children all day long. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Charlie Orphanides\nTruly a mover\, Charlie is an integral part of The Denver Waldorf school faculty\, and came to our school after teaching at Waldorf schools in Boulder\, New York City\, and New Hampshire. He has been teaching for a decade\, and began his career fortified with an English degree from Lewis and Clark College\, a master of education degree and Waldorf teacher certification from Antioch University—complemented with many trainings in movement\, art\, and meditation studies. Charlie is also a graduate of a 5-year training program in “Spacial” Dynamics\, certified in Bothmer Gymnastics (based on exercises from the first gym teacher at the first Waldorf school)\, and has been teaching circus for more than 7 years. \nAway from the classroom\, Charlie’s hobbies include gardening\, fixing and building things\, running\, bicycling\, playing with his two sons\, reading\, writing\, studying a variety of healing modalities\, and playing guitar and piano (along with anything else with which it’s fun to make music!). \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a monthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. By connecting one another\, we aim to join in the worldwide effort to educate for humanity. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. \nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nWe are currently enrolling for in-person learning. Learn more about our onsite tours and in-person shadowing for: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nIn his book\, A Whole New Mind\, Daniel Pink describes the new skills for the workers who will be needed in the future\, skills that go beyond a traditional academic education: \n\nDesign\nStory\nSymphony\nEmpathy\nPlay\nMeaning\n\nRudolf Steiner spoke of Waldorf education in a similar way.  He said\, “The heart of the Waldorf method is that education is an art\, it must speak to the child’s experience. To educate the whole child\, his heart and his will must be reached\, as well as the mind.” \nWe integrate these skills into every lesson at The Denver Waldorf School. As the school’s mission statement reads\, DWS awakens and inspires students’ critical thinking\, emotional intelligence\, and artistic expression\, preparing them to bring relevant contributions to the world.  The Waldorf school’s varied and integrated curriculum gives students the opportunity to develop\, first and foremost\, abilities and capacities.  In our classes the ability to create\, to think\, and to do are paramount.  Learning which builds toward understanding of the whole is the goal rather than the accumulation and memorization of facts themselves. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Cynthia Bennett\nCynthia Bennett worked as a Waldorf high school educator teaching mathematics and science for 17 years at the Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda\, Maryland. Subsequently\, she led the faculty there as College Chair for four years\, before leaving to take up adult education. She spent another 12 years educating four cohorts of Waldorf teachers\, and introducing numerous parents to Waldorf philosophy and education through the NOVA Institute. \nShe now works as a Waldorf educational consultant. Cynthia came to Denver in 2017\, and since then has been active at The Denver Waldorf School leading parent and faculty studies\, mentoring teachers\, and supporting the school in many ways. She also is a grandparent of a DWS second grader. \nWe are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? Sit down with some of our students and faculty during our online Q&A to discuss how the curriculum integrates academics\, arts\, and athletics in educating the whole student. \nDate: February 11\, 2021 \nTime: 12pm MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nLed by DWS High School Director Brie Kaiser\, our faculty and students will answer common questions such as: \n\nWhat is Waldorf education and what classes does DWS offer?\nHow does Waldorf education prepare students for university and beyond?\nWhat does a day at The Denver Waldorf High School look like?\n\nAbout The Denver Waldorf High School\nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nEngaging Body\, Intellect\, and Emotion\nAt the start of each day\, movement helps spark students’ circulation and bring them together. They then engage in a long\, uninterrupted seminar (referred to as main lesson in elementary and middle school) to activate their minds\, followed by music and elective classes to spark emotional expression. Music classes and elective courses promote the development of healthy emotional expression through creation. \nHigh School Music\nRegarding music\, all high school students participate in chorus\, with the option to participate in either music ensemble or orchestra until their senior year. Students new to DWS and who have not played their instrument before are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. \nHands-On Learning of Real-World Skills\nStudents apply what they’ve learned theoretically to scenarios in the real world. For example\, a study of soil composition could be applied to a chemistry lesson on acids and bases\, as well as a close reading of The Grapes of Wrath\, and a course in black-and-white photography in which they learn to develop their own film. \nRhythm of Thinking\, Feeling\, and Willing\nOur goal is to expose our high school students to academic wealth\, and demonstrate to them that all knowledge is valuable to encourage their pursuit of wisdom throughout life. \nThe high school curriculum revisits themes and subjects periodically to strengthen functional knowledge. Students cultivate their ability to think critically\, organize ideas and information\, and clearly present thoughts through an academically challenging mix of math\, English\, humanities\, physics\, life sciences\, chemistry\, world language\, practical\, industrial and fine arts\, chorus\, orchestra\, drama\, and physical education. We are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? SUMMARY:The Bridge: The 12 Senses with Nancy Blanning
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nUp Next on The Bridge: The 12 Senses\nHow do the 12 senses lay the foundation for healthy student development? This week on The Bridge\, Waldorf educator Nancy Blanning offers a framework for understanding these senses\, how they serve us\, and how they develop as “partners” in setting the foundation for how we will live comfortably within our bodies and with each other in social life. \nDate: January 27\, 2020 \nTime: 10am MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nWaldorf education works from a unique — and sometimes curious — view of how the human being grows and develops through the whole of life\, not just during childhood. Rudolf Steiner\, the founder of Waldorf education\, described that each of us has twelve senses. There are the commonly recognized five senses that tell us about the world around us. Yet there are also other sensing avenues that tell us about ourselves within ourselves and our physical relation to the world. Still more inform us about and connect us to the outer social world with other human beings. Steiner went on to say that how these senses mature in childhood lays the foundation for future development in all realms for the rest of life. \nIt is exciting for Waldorf education that modern neurological research is confirming that this is true. The sensory experiences we have from early childhood on literally build the brain. The way the body moves also forms the brain we will have for the whole of life. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Nancy Blanning\nNancy Blanning is an early childhood educator with a special interest in movement and has been working with young children in Waldorf settings for nearly 40 years. She has served as Denver Waldorf School faculty since 1987 as both lead kindergarten teacher and educational support staff. Nancy is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national and international Waldorf early childhood conferences. She is co-director of Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training at Sunbridge Institute in Spring Valley\, NY\, and is guest faculty at other teacher training programs. Nancy has also traveled widely as mentor and consultant to Waldorf schools in the US and Canada. She is editor of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association journal\, Gateways\, has edited several books\, and is author of Walking with Our Children: The Parent as Companion and Guide. DWS colleague\, Laurie Clark\, and Nancy have written and published movement imaginations for Waldorf early childhood teachers\, Movement Journeys and Circle Adventures\, Vol. 1 and 2. \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a bimonthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. Sit down with some of our students and faculty during our online Q&A to talk high school science\, math\, humanities\, and more. \nDate: January 12\, 2021 \nTime: 12pm MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nLed by DWS High School Administrator Brie Kaiser\, our faculty and students will answer common questions such as: \n\nWhat is Waldorf education and what classes does DWS offer?\nHow does Waldorf education prepare students for university and beyond?\nWhat does a day at The Denver Waldorf looks like\n\nAbout The Denver Waldorf High School\nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. We are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? SUMMARY:The Denver Waldorf School Financial Aid and Tuition Adjustment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop and Live Q&A\nDo you have questions about DWS tuition adjustment and scholarships? Please attend our financial aid workshop with Business Director Laurie Thompson and Admissions Manager Brooke Camfield to learn how to apply for the 2021–2022 school year. \nDate: Saturday\, December 19 \nTime: 9-10am MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nThis workshop is open to currently enrolled and prospective families. Please scroll down to register and reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring the workshop\, Laurie and Brooke will cover: \n\nTuition adjustment (TA) process (applications\, review\, and deadlines)\nScholarships\n\nThe Denver Waldorf School is committed to economic diversity. The Board of Trustees\, College Leadership Council\, Faculty\, Administration and parents work together to raise funds\, volunteer\, and make challenging budgetary decisions to keep tuition within the financial means of the largest possible group. We seek to establish financial relationships that are healthy for the school and the families within our community. \nAbout Tuition Adjustment\nAt DWS\, we recognize that many families want the inspired learning environment that an independent Waldorf education provides\, and that this type of education requires a significant financial commitment. Therefore\, DWS budgets a significant portion of income to our Tuition Adjustment Program\, but the budgeted funds are limited. All families who wish to provide Waldorf education for their child(ren) are encouraged to seek the means to make this education a viable option. \nDWS expects families to exercise their best creative efforts to use their own financial resources before turning to the Tuition Adjustment Program. It is not uncommon for a DWS family to pay 15 to 20% or more of their income for tuition. This percentage applies to both full and reduced tuition families. Tuition Adjustment is not based on willingness to pay\, but on one’s ability to pay. Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nFounded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. Want to learn more about the benefits of Waldorf education? Join us online during one of our many virtual events. \nDWS is also currently enrolling preschool\, kindergarten\, elementary\, middle and high school students. If you haven’t met us yet\, we invite you to tour our school to see the Denver campus and chat in person! \nWebinar Registration\n[vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js]
