Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nIn his book\, A Whole New Mind\, Daniel Pink describes the new skills for the workers who will be needed in the future\, skills that go beyond a traditional academic education: \n\nDesign\nStory\nSymphony\nEmpathy\nPlay\nMeaning\n\nRudolf Steiner spoke of Waldorf education in a similar way.  He said\, “The heart of the Waldorf method is that education is an art\, it must speak to the child’s experience. To educate the whole child\, his heart and his will must be reached\, as well as the mind.” \nWe integrate these skills into every lesson at The Denver Waldorf School. As the school’s mission statement reads\, DWS awakens and inspires students’ critical thinking\, emotional intelligence\, and artistic expression\, preparing them to bring relevant contributions to the world.  The Waldorf school’s varied and integrated curriculum gives students the opportunity to develop\, first and foremost\, abilities and capacities.  In our classes the ability to create\, to think\, and to do are paramount.  Learning which builds toward understanding of the whole is the goal rather than the accumulation and memorization of facts themselves. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Cynthia Bennett\nCynthia Bennett worked as a Waldorf high school educator teaching mathematics and science for 17 years at the Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda\, Maryland. Subsequently\, she led the faculty there as College Chair for four years\, before leaving to take up adult education. She spent another 12 years educating four cohorts of Waldorf teachers\, and introducing numerous parents to Waldorf philosophy and education through the NOVA Institute. \nShe now works as a Waldorf educational consultant. Cynthia came to Denver in 2017\, and since then has been active at The Denver Waldorf School leading parent and faculty studies\, mentoring teachers\, and supporting the school in many ways. She also is a grandparent of a DWS second grader. \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a monthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. By connecting one another\, we aim to join in the worldwide effort to educate for humanity. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado. Founded in 1974 on Rudolf Steiner’s humanitarian curriculum\, DWS believes education should foster what it is to be human\, cultivate lifelong curiosity\, and inspire a love for the world. \nThe Denver Waldorf High School offers a liberal arts education\, consciously aimed to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals. The high school experience aims to balance the students’ academic needs with their longing to find meaning in the world. \nWe are currently enrolling for in-person learning: \n\nPreschool and kindergarten (ECE)\nElementary school\nMiddle school\nHigh School\n\nWant to learn more about us? Schedule an in-person tour of our Denver campus or join us online during our virtual events.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:The Bridge: The 12 Senses with Nancy Blanning
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nUp Next on The Bridge: The 12 Senses\nHow do the 12 senses lay the foundation for healthy student development? This week on The Bridge\, Waldorf educator Nancy Blanning offers a framework for understanding these senses\, how they serve us\, and how they develop as “partners” in setting the foundation for how we will live comfortably within our bodies and with each other in social life. \nDate: January 27\, 2020 \nTime: 10am MST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nWe will follow the presentation with a live Q&A. Please register to reserve a seat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nWaldorf education works from a unique — and sometimes curious — view of how the human being grows and develops through the whole of life\, not just during childhood. Rudolf Steiner\, the founder of Waldorf education\, described that each of us has twelve senses. There are the commonly recognized five senses that tell us about the world around us. Yet there are also other sensing avenues that tell us about ourselves within ourselves and our physical relation to the world. Still more inform us about and connect us to the outer social world with other human beings. Steiner went on to say that how these senses mature in childhood lays the foundation for future development in all realms for the rest of life. \nIt is exciting for Waldorf education that modern neurological research is confirming that this is true. The sensory experiences we have from early childhood on literally build the brain. The way the body moves also forms the brain we will have for the whole of life. \nAbout Waldorf Educator Nancy Blanning\nNancy Blanning is an early childhood educator with a special interest in movement and has been working with young children in Waldorf settings for nearly 40 years. She has served as Denver Waldorf School faculty since 1987 as both lead kindergarten teacher and educational support staff. Nancy is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national and international Waldorf early childhood conferences. She is co-director of Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training at Sunbridge Institute in Spring Valley\, NY\, and is guest faculty at other teacher training programs. Nancy has also traveled widely as mentor and consultant to Waldorf schools in the US and Canada. She is editor of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association journal\, Gateways\, has edited several books\, and is author of Walking with Our Children: The Parent as Companion and Guide. DWS colleague\, Laurie Clark\, and Nancy have written and published movement imaginations for Waldorf early childhood teachers\, Movement Journeys and Circle Adventures\, Vol. 1 and 2. \nAbout The Bridge\nThe Bridge is a bimonthly webinar series hosted by The Denver Waldorf School on the benefits of Waldorf education. He attended Evergreen State College and graduated with a Master’s in Education and a Waldorf Teaching Certificate from Antioch University of New England in 2010. In addition to teaching at The Denver Waldorf School\, currently as 8th Grade Teacher\, Vernon also serves as a founding member and co-chair of the school’s Diversity Committee. \nAbout Magally Luna\nNearly 20 years\, Magally joined the DWS community to teach Spanish. Today\, she serves in the elementary school as our 4th grade teacher. “I bring a diverse curriculum to my class of cuties\,” she says. She has been on the school’s D&I Committee since its inception\, starting with conversations with Laurie Clark in the Morning Glory classroom. She is the founder and co-chair of AWSNA’S BIPOC affinity group\, — supporting Waldorf teachers of color throughout the nation — and she has taught BIPOC stories\, songs\, and movement from the Americas at several national conferences. \nAbout Mahdyeh Nowkhandan\nMahdyeh Nowkhandan is a new DWS parent and member of the D&I Committee\, and has recently become one of the leads on the new Denver Waldorf Racial Justice Parent Group. She has a background in advocacy work and racial justice\, as well as elementary education — including social-emotional and special education. By connecting one another\, we aim to join in the worldwide effort to educate for humanity. \nAbout The Denver Waldorf School\nThe Denver Waldorf School is an urban pre-K through 12 independent school in Colorado.
